Re: The moon landing at CH
Just for the record, our youngest daughter still believes the moon landing was all a big US conspiracy a la Capricorn 1. Have you asked her how they managed to launch so many rockets in public view, and then make them disappear? Why they cocked up Apollo 13, in the interests of 'faking it'? How the...

Re: The moon landing at CH
Mr Aldrin's punch was self-defence, and more justified than I had realised, he is truly a great man, my apologies to him for thinking it not massively provoked. Shame that these crack-pots get the oxygen of publicity, but forewarned is forearmed. I do recall seeing a replica of the module at the Sci...

Re: The moon landing at CH
I read that someone told Buzz Aldrin the Moon landing was a hoax, and Buzz punched him. He's knocking on a bit now, but perhaps discretion is advised should they ever meet.Just for the record, our youngest daughter still believes the moon landing was all a big US conspiracy a la Capricorn 1.

Re: The moon landing at CH
Men have been sent to, and explored the Moon. Probes have been to Mars, Venus, Mercury, even the Sun, and to Jupiter and beyond, the entire Solar System has been scrutinised.
But no one has yet found a good explanation for why CH management tolerated so many perverts working there for so long.

Re: INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS AND VAT
Perhaps 7 years of regular doses of horse meat have had serious side-effects.Is that what prompted your forum name, Mr Ed?
wurzel,
That's a very good point worth noting.

Re: INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS AND VAT
I think the VAT on school fees idea is used by those who hate the freedom that private education represents but are too cowardly to openly state their aims, preferring to starve the blameless lamb rather than openly slit its throat. On the subject of horse meat, I have seen it in an Italian supermar...

Re: INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS AND VAT
The scope of VAT is immense, and clearly for the Directive to be amended to remove this exemption would be a Herculean task. Furthermore, if VAT on school fees comes in, it will most likely come in too on to University Tuition fees, over £9,000 pa. now AIUI, adding c. £1,800 pa to the cost or a tidy...

Re: History of the Band
On the basis that it is mellow, well, compared to its screechy, showy little sister, they almost do.Do your neighbours and your family-members enjoy your playing the viola?

Re: History of the Band
There were bassoons in the band in my time, late 70s to mid-80s. I played the clarinet (badly) for a while, not making past a brief stint in the Second Band. The bassoon was certainly a feature of the Band, albeit exotic. The starter instrument was the clarinet or oboe in woodwind, and you could pro...

Re: Bishop Peter Ball
Well, the dead can't be libelled or prosecuted, so some word about this man from the School is perhaps due. And I don't expect an oration.

Re: 1968 and all that
But in 1968 Paris was ablaze and Grosvenor Square was rioting. I'd love to know what was happening at CH from anyone who was there at the time. Well in the Summer of 1968, they were probably wondering if the Soviets would invade Czechoslovakia, and so they did, along with the East Germans, Poles, H...

Whether it is over-rated, it was clearly wasted on you.

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?
Any consensual (at least I assume/hope) relationships between staff and students were more or less open secrets, and there were, apparently, more of them going on at the time than I knew about. Remarkable really, that the School's management were, at best, so utterly inept in this matter. I left th...

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?
This is just Thatcherite dogma. The famines you mention are a result of civil war or deliberate genocide policies in countries with market economies. Mises' economic calculation argument falls apart at the slightest inspection. Funny you should say that von Mises' argument falls down. Khrushchev hi...

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?
The free market is not a rational mechanism for allocating resources for the benefit of humanity or the planet. Ah. the appeal to 'reason', who was it who dedicated the former Temple of Reason that recently burnt down in Paris? If you try to hand out food by reason, you end up with mass starvation,...
