Re: Politics

My Science teachers were useless (or was it me?). Phallic Mathews, Potty Burr, Tangent Sillett, PF Higgins, I seem to remember a Wilson as being the one who taught me most although it can't have been very much as I failed Physics and Chemistry O level twice, getting an 8 the first time and a 9 the s...

Re: Politics

"Surely, in a western European state in the 21st century, all youngsters are entitled to a good education. Luck shouldn't come into it." . There is a finite number of competent teachers, many being unable to speeeel properloike or do simple sums. Therefore those schools like CH which can ...

Re: Christ's Hospital, ecole de excellence anglaise

Bill, is CH a private school? A public school? A government assisted school? Oh the vagaries of the English language!

Re: Memorable Sermons

Don't remember many sermons but I do remember Newsome tearing us off a strip in assembly, ranting on about spitting. He started: Globules, gentlemen.

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

I left in 1977 (I think!) and have the charge stuck inside both the Bible and the little prayer book which accompanied it. Both are still in their little gold boxes with inscriptions written in the fair hand of Max Mylvaganam.

Something which I remember to this day about 40 years after the event is Rex Sweeney saying The Gondoliers have gone delirious.

Re: Pranks in Chapel

This is a non-Chapel prank, but it merits mention, even if only to condemn it for its crassness. By chance I came across a recording on You Tube (at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-6CAfxwHlQ ) called “christ hospital school prank” [sic], which recounts a fictitious phone call to CH allegedly from...

Re: So, the underground tunnels...

Very interesting, brings back some memories. I always remember it (in the 70s) as being so dark and very scary. We always used to run parts of it with our hearts in our mouth. For a time a room under Thorn B was used as a tv room. Don't think it lasted very long though.

Re: The Matron's Inspection

Hygiene in those days was poor to a degree that can only be described as appalling. My wife, listening to stories about CH, says she can approve of much of the Spartan outlook, but finds the fact that we could not (or at least did not) wash our private areas daily and thoroughly quite disgusting. (...

Re: Bed-Wetting

I seem to remember some boys had rubber sheets and almost all the mattresses had very suspicious stains. Angela, I'm not sure how ´beatings, bashings or stern talks`would solve such a problem as it's obviously not something they do on purpose.

Re: Tuck shop

Oh no. It was a magical place. I'd often run there after lunch with a shilling to buy a quarter of strawberries and cream (wonderful boiled sweets that I can still taste today nearly 45 years later!) and penny chews. I can't remember the name of the woman who ran it in the 70s but I do remember tha...

I remember John ´Dud` Dunkley very well, he took me to one of my first footy matches, at Highbury to see his beloved Arsenal.
Unfortunately Stuart Pryle committed suicide at the tender age of 30. Very sad.

Re: Punishments at CH

It is easy to forget that the social mores of "acceptable punishment" for children were very different 30 plus years ago to those of today. I therefore hesitate to condemn too strongly masters who were merely acting in accordance with the standards of the time. To put it another way I'd w...
