Re: Here's a hypothetical

When I was at CH (92-99), the Grecians’ club sold alcohol to anyone over 17. (I think the law changed after I left on this)

Consequently, having a beer with your housemaster or tutor on your deps and grecians was relatively common but it was, at least in my case - one beer and off out...

Re: Dobbie sentencing hearing

Regarding Dobbie still being a priest or not, I take the following direct from Facebook from Joshua Bell (who will be priested shortly) ‘at the time of Dobbie's arrest in 2016, he was teaching at Shrewsbury School. Once charged, he would have been suspended pending the investigation - and at that ti...

Looks like the ones in 2004/5 - I can’t open them though!

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

Perhaps I have been a trifle remiss (nothing new there!), but I was not aware that the Grecians' Club had closed. Does that mean that the Grecian Houses have also closed? Can someone explain, please? :?: David  The grecians’ houses are still there but there’s not been a club for a number of ...

Re: Where in CH is this?

It is indeed the old library - now called the ‘some generous benefactor’ career centre. Certainly, in the last 10 years, the school’s career advice has come on leaps and bounds. The dominion’s library is now a lecture theatre (the riches lecture theatre is too small to take the deps or grecians as t...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?

No Grecians' club? How sad. That was a refreshing escape from the regimented life. Normally I'd rant about neo-victorian puritanism but given the prominent role of alcohol in the 70s-90s child molesting epidemic, I'd reluctantly say maybe it was necessary. I think with the change of licensing laws ...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

(Edit:- Just realised I’m still “friends” with him and a number of other CH staff from my time. I plan to leave that as-is I think - see if anyone takes over his account, given there’s still some out there who unbelievably think he’s innocent!) I see Bob Sillett is still friends with him. It probab...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

Some pretty nasty comments have been posted with links to press reports both this weekend and 9 months ago so his friends should become aware soon enough. An interesting comment from one person regarding Shrewsbury School His Facebook friends would only see those comments if they originally comment...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

The account is still ‘active’ as people can still comment on his posts; someone posted yesterday.

I still have 60 mutual friends on there who are ‘friends’ with his profile; I would wager that many of them have no idea that they are still ‘friends’ with his profile.

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

I'm staggered that it appears Dobbie still has 526 'friends' on Facebook. Looking at names, I recognise a large number as being pupils, and staff members, at CH. I know Facebook's considered old hat now, perhaps that's why people haven't removed their Facebook association with him? To be honest, pe...

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

Whites is a large house (the avenells moved in after the murdochs I think). I don’t remember Dobbie living there really (I came in 1992) - he may have lived elsewhere before becoming housemaster of mid a. Graftons is a block of 4 flats that was built in the extensive grounds of Whites in the 80s I g...

did GWD live at Whites at a certain time?
Yes, Dobbie lived at Whites in the 90s (at least up until '96 when I left).
Reverend Murdoch and his 6 kids lived at Whites between 92-94 - did Dobbie move in after for a couple of years before he became housemaster?

Re: Trial of Gary William Dobbie

When I was at CH (92-99), there were, as others have said, only two compulsory services a week - one on Sunday, either in the morning or evening, and the junior / senior chapels on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. There were other services, an 8am short communion on a Monday, never more than 10 peopl...

Re: Ernest McCall- Maths teacher / housemaster Maine A

Staff moved around a fair bit during my time, as I remember it anyway, not any specific reason as far as I can recall. The Endacott's, Holdsworth's, Flemming's, for example, all were in multiple houses while I was there. Also a bunch of teachers who were house masters/tutors then moved out but stil...
