Re: Bags I Read that After You!
We ad Georgette Heyer in 3s too (house library was 3 shelves of battered paperbacks on the lockers between the dayroom doorand the hatch to Lil's sitting room) but I was such a snob I wouldn't read them... I've made up for it since though. We had some Jalna too - I remember Rosemary Morgan reading t...

Re: Happy Birthday, MaryB!
Thank you everyone. My birthday always nearly coincided with the return to school - in 1964 new girls arrived on 19 August (Carolynn's birthday I think) and sometimes we actually went back on my birthday. This all seemed quite unfair as up until then the only good thing about an August birthday, whe...

Re: Hertford hygeine, hierarchies and heartache (from CH For
There are Old Girls who have been bitterly hurt and that the pain has stayed with them - and goodness knows how many of them aren't Forumites - sacked, or left CH in a state of non-achievement... . Sadly this is only too true. I saw a friend last week - someone who would certainly have appeared to ...

Re: School Needlework
Ahem! Mary! You could sew, allright... I have never forgotten the time we queued to have DR and SWSNBN inspect us wearing our Needlework! I know I've written about it before, but I, having been quickly inspected with something of a shudder by the two dragon women, remember the beaming approval that...

Re: Hertford Uniforms
Here's one of me in my harris tweed coat ...and aren't those the itchy dark flecked brown woollen socks that wouldn't stay up even if you could find your garters and smelt so dreadful when they were washed? I remember mine hanging odorously up to dry above the boiler in the kitchen at home - it mus...

Re: CH food
What did we use for the fish knives etc? I have a sort of sensory memory of a pink gritty paste with a distinctively repulsive smell, which could linger into the Friday fish if it wasn't "taken off" properly. But mercifully it's separate from the cake.

Re: Leavers and fees
That's a valid point Neill but what if a child qualifies to be admitted on "glass ceiling grounds" at 11 but family fortunes improve in the meantime. Should the child be made to leave at (say) 15 because his /her parents earn too much? My father worked for West Sussex County Council and w...

Re: Leavers and fees
I haven't contributed to this thread before because I haven't felt I had a personal basis for doing so, and we are indeed a very small minority on this forum. However, I know two children currently at CH in very different circumstances - one the child of affluent middle class parents and one from a ...
