Re: Politics

For those of us on the other side of the Atlantic, what is going on? Does BJ think an election would give him a clear majority? What is the rationale (if any) behind the support of other parties? I understand I may get very different answers from various members.

Re: History in the fifties?

My memories are limited. I do remember being confused by the 100 years war: England destroys the French at Crecy: England massacres the French at Poitiers: England annihilates the French at Agincourt: England is out of France. Years later I read a French textbook that assured me that, apart from a f...

Re: Did anyone know?

I can only speak from my era. Caught smoking was serious enough. Caught drinking was probably enough to earn expulsion. Reminds me of the old joke about an American visiting CH "So, it seems pretty strict here compared to the States: are the boys allowed to drink?" "Never; it would m...

Re: Politics

I’m being urged to get a 15 year mortgage. Considering we own our house, it seems a little strange. Obviously I need to start searching some more interesting sites.

Re: Andrew Fawcett R.I.P.

I think that’s why our mothers bonded, mine was also single (having been deserted by two husbands). Sending me to CH was largely a financial decision.

Re: Andrew Fawcett R.I.P.

my friends that year included John Steward, Ken Baumber and Alan Rowe. Ring any bells? Ken Baumber and I arrived at CH on the same train. Our families shared a carriage and walked together from the station until we were directed in opposite directions (ColB vs MaA). While Ken and I seldom interacte...

Re: Graham Norton Show

I'm sorry, I'm just totally adrift of modern day pop music. These days I watch You Tube videos of old 60s and 70s acts that I grew up with. I find myself doing the same, partly because so little of today’s music appeals to me, being so derivative (OMG, I realize I sound like my great-aunt). On the ...

Re: RIP Dame Elizabeth Taylor.

Hi all... Yes, Elizabeth was technically my great-aunt by marriage. Richard was my great-uncle, but as he was brought up by my grandmother when their mother died (the was 18 years older than him and just married) he was brought up as an uncle. (You never call someone "great-Uncle" do you?...

[quote=Pe.A post_id=144886 time=1556695348 user_id It is not just rich people; when the state school refused to give my dyslexic son any help ("He'll never be anything so I'm not going to waste resources. I can just sit at the back of the class and do nothing") we had to pay for private s...

“No material passes from any animal into its gut; the movement is entirely the other way round”
Professor Pedant wakes!
In fact a significant amount of mucous is secreted into the intestine and intestinal epithelial cells are constantly sloughed off.
Professor Pedant goes back to sleep.

Re: Anyone else who hated being at CH ?

Another good post, David . I was fortunate in the CCF to become trained as a 'Bren gunner' by RSM ' Cookie ' Cooke. There were two Bren squads in my time and I still have fond affections for the weapon. Q.E.D. So, you will be able to answer the password: which part of a Bren was 'the dog's delight?...

Ah, Flanders and Swan

They've simply no notion of playing the game
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won
And they practice beforehand which ruins the fun!

When I started reading this thread I was freaking out, as I assumed it was talking about the old days at CH.
