Re: WATER TOWER

An interesting ‘aside’ from the underlying topic: Quite coincidentally, the CH Water Tower and its height were fresh in my mind yesterday when I answered the original post. My wife’s family in UK has ancestral links to a small town in central Germany and just the day before yesterday we unearthed a...

Re: I.A.R. Christie, Lamb A 1956-63

A beautiful obituary note. I missed it earlier. Ian Christie was three years later than me at CH. I don't recall him and thus unfortunately cannot add anything. However, there was an earlier D C L Christie, a contemporary of mine, who was 1952-59 (including one year in the Prep, I think). D C L Chri...

Re: THE AVENUE

Referring to my previous post, I just noticed that the latest Google Earth image of CH, which carries the date of 26 Sep 2018, in fact shows an unusually clear picture of Dinner Parade (or is it now Lunch Parade?) in progress, with just a small band present - presumably because the school was just s...

Re: THE AVENUE

Although this may not be of much use for the question originally posted (magnetic bearing of the Avenue), members of the Forum may like to know that there is a dead-simple procedure in Google Earth for finding the bearing of anything (I presume that Google Earth's bearings are true north). Proceed a...

Re: WATER TOWER

In my day it was clearly known as being 120 feet high. In a Maths class with I R McConnell we once did some trig exercises and surveyed the tower with some rudimentary surveyor's tools, so I remember the 'official' height clearly. Not sure whether the quoted height of 120 feet was to the peak of the...

Re: Tuck parcels

I can't recall anyone ever receiving a "tuck parcel" in my time (1953-60). However, the concept must have been similar to the "food parcels" that some of our families (like mine) used to receive from relatives in North America at the end of and just after the Second World War. As...

Re: RIP Jasper Griffin

Vey sad news. Sincere condolences to his family. I skim most of the papers each day on the Web, but I must have missed this (and I don't recall seeing it in any of the recent OB News from CH). Thanks, Rockfreak, for bringing this up. The name Jasper Griffin immediately got my attention. I was a Clas...

Obituary Old Blue Ted Kenney – and his Fufu test for college applicants

I was sad to learn, through yesterday's CHOBA email News, of the recent passing of Old Blue Professor Edward (Ted) Kenney, Col A 35-43. In addition to his distinguished academic career in Classics at Cambridge, he was also a dedicated, lifelong supporter and benefactor of CH and among things served ...

Re: Milk

"Setting aside": we couldn't keep the bottles back, so, in Col A, the reserved milk was poured into a large black enamelled saucepan and simply left in a relatively safe place in the dayroom..... Again, identical in all details in Ma A, except that our large saucepan was an aluminium one....

Re: Milk

My memories are very clear and identical to those of eucsgmrc, whose timing at CH I share (I was Ma A 53-60). There were always two crates of milk bottles delivered each morning before the break to the first window-sill in our day room, where you helped yourself after PT was over (together with the ...

CH Band marching speeds

Just watched last Saturday's Beating Retreat 2019 on YouTube – impressive as usual. Thanks to "Aviator" for uploading this. Interesting to see that, as last year, the band did not wear housey coats. Maybe another good example of "global warming". 2019 can be downloaded at https:/...

Re: RIP Michael Scuffil

Yes, sad news. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I have really appreciated his contributions to this forum over the years. People like Michael are the ones that make the CH network so great. Pity we can't recognise them in some way. Although he was a couple of years my junior at CH, ...

CH in this week's Economist magazine re sex scandal in 1815

I was intrigued to see in this week's issue of The Economist magazine a passing reference to sexual escapades at Christ's Hospital in the Regency period (1811-20). The article, a review of a book written by Canadian history professor Robert Morrison, a specialist on the English Regency period, is no...

Re: Christ's Hospital Bands 1991

Yes, there was a band-music cassette published by CH in the mid-late 1980s, possibly pre-dating the one that you have just placed on Youtube and carrying a different set of pieces. I bought it directly from CH by mail-order. The cassette, titled CHRISTS HOSPITAL BANDS, was notable for the colour pai...
