Re: Did anyone know?
Agreed, as I said, you are entitled to your feelings and perspectives. It's not about being an enthusiast or apologist. It's about maintaining a bit of perspective. The guy taught for over 3 decades after. Yes, he is and was a paragon of virtue. In his own words: 'Durrant, of Milton Abbas, Blandford...

Re: Did anyone know?
Just some of the countries that prosecute teachers who burst pupil's eardrums. I meant no offense to enlightened corporal punishment enthusiasts and apologists.I certainly wouldn't hold up India, Kenya or Uganda as examples of best practice

Re: Did anyone know?
Yes indeed, India, Kenya, and Uganda do show great respect to children. I don't think anyone, including Mr Durrant himself, is suggesting that slapping / striking a pupil is acceptable in any way. Durrant said that the assault incident was either miscalculated or accidental (https://www.chforum.info...

Re: Did anyone know?
Teachers bursting pupils' eardrums seem to make the news outside the UK - and lead to convictions for teachers. But, no doubt that rest of the world will eventually catch up with the enlightened 'Durrant school' system for house sports discipline... https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/te...

Re: Did anyone know?
Alcohol has been mentioned several times in the grooming of pupils. See for example:

Re: Did anyone know?
1. Why so curious...? 2. I'm not fundamentally opposed to the 16-18 age range being given alcohol. With regards to Durrant, what makes you sure that he gave alcohol to the pupils...? 3. I'm not going to name names simply because a/ it's irrelevant b/ i don't want to start a potential rumour mill. 1...

Re: Did anyone know?
Which teachers?During my senior years at CH i got a bit drunk in more than one teacher's house
So adults giving minors alcohol (like Durrant did) is entirely normal?Like i would say!
If so, why not indicate which teachers did this with you?

Re: Did anyone know?
Robert Durrant..on Robert Durrant. I was very stressed and reacted by trying to call him quickly to order by smacking him around the head. https://www.chforum.info/php/viewtopic.php?f=65&t=5274&start=150#p146007 Durrant, of Milton Abbas, Blandford, told jurors at Dorchester Crown Court he wa...

Re: Did anyone know?
We have already seen from Robin Durrant's posts the damage that incomplete information and misunderstandings can do. Do you mean Robert Durrant? Robert C Durrant was a master who was asked to resign but given a reference by headmaster Newsome after Durrant assaulted and burst a pupil's eardrum (acc...

Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
I'm really struggling with any allegation against Dick Dawe. <snip> I am simply devastated to hear of the suffering that was taking place .. I agree on both points - Dick Dawe was a good teacher - my guess is that really was an accident. That post is mentioned as an example of CH providing compensa...

Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
Who suddenly departed in your time? Not familiar with the story re dental bills, which sounds concerning. Please share as much as possible. Here are some sudden departure examples - not including the now convicted teachers (some of whom also left suddenly, of course). AH Buck: https://www.chforum.i...

Re: CH Letter re support for abuse survivors
I think that the letter is encouraging. Here are the things that worry me: I believe that Simon Reid was a teacher at the school in the 1990s - and as others have noted - there was knowledge of things going on among the staff in the school in the 1990s. We also know that there must have been knowled...
