I never liked that 'Love The Brotherhood' bit.
On reflection, it's all a bit shoddy - fearing God seems a bit fire and brimstone, and I'll leave it to someone else to honour the King. Perhaps it's time for a new motto?

Re: Barnes Wallis
Most were repaired swiftly, but the repairs were hasty and the reservoirs could not be fully filled. The flood damage was extensive and had the desired effect on manufacturing capability. Destruction to such sites is no longer permitted - something we learned in 2003 when trying to find ways of givi...

Re: Barnes Wallis
I will tell you two things about the Dambusters raid that were not mentioned in the film. 1) 1200 civilians were killed, most of them forced labourers from Poland. 2) The Möhne Dam was rebuilt within four months. The other two were barely scratched. It achieved nothing. That film keeps changing. In...

Yes, that seems about right. ISTR a spur that ran S into Big School a bit. The tube that ran N to the pool was a more modest affair and known as the kettle.
The infirmary spur ran N from between Maine and LH and was quite spooky.

Re: RIP Sir Colin Davis
Don't know if this is of interest, but Sir C's two (I think) sisters attended Hertford, and hated eating the weekly fish dish (fish bones in cheese sauce one week, alternating with fish bones in white sauce with green bits the next) with 'regular' cutlery, so, when financially able to do so, genero...

Re: The Housey Rap
In fact 'that wretched Lord of the Dance hymn' would be very suitable in this case, because it was written by an Old Blue, Sydney Carter! Oh I knew that - chiefly because the chaplaincy told us and rolled it out all the time, as well as dire threats if we sang the unofficial version. I've never lik...

Re: The Housey Rap
That's hilarious. Most of the 'in' jokes apply in 1986 too - and 'praise the lord for fags and homebrew' to the sound of the school hymn was around in '86 too. There was also a ban on singing 'run then, wherever you may be, we are the drunk and disorderly' in chapel and on the touchline (to the tune...

All subjective. I wouldn't have come so fawningly to the defence of one of them.HowardH wrote:Would seem from your punishments from two of the most admired of all schoolmasters in the history of our fine school that they were not the a**hole!

Re: Our man at the Eastleigh by-election
By the way, I am not altogether sure of the meaning of "wally". I take it to be some pressure group or association within the conservative/UKIP part of the political spectrum. Is the left wing equivalent a "lolly" - perhaps having originated from the Lollards?? That's rather goo...

Re: Our man at the Eastleigh by-election
Not in the slightest - you could insert a lengthy paean of praise for the Tories. It's highly likely that the UKIP candidate was a wally, though. This site needs to decide what it wants to be. I've seen no rule that it's apolitical - have you seen the one that says that the spaghetti god (PBUH) is a...

Re: "The Blue 2012" - Oh Dear...
Actually, you've reminded me... Practically my first experience of CH (apart from the cosy ambrosia-filled richmal Compton-esque) experience of the entrance exam) was of a blood spattered day room where some new LE has eviscerated themselves trying to cut the slot in the belt for the t-bar at the ba...

Re: "The Blue 2012" - Oh Dear...
Firstly, the buckle looks much better offset, more rakish, you might say... Secondly, in the mid eighties at least, the things were appallingly made, both fragile and bad design. As they were given to coming loose unless you improvised a shoelace second line of defence, wearing them offset meant tha...
