Re: PRIVATE EYE
Interesting letter in latest issue of Private Eye (4 April 2014; p15). There has been some discussion in the rag about the tax affairs of the John Laing Construction Co. The letter-writer, one David Briggs, is upset by the criticism of a company renowned for its charitable activities and goes on to...

Re: Politics
Thanks for your support Ann. I think we war babies and baby boomers are perhaps more aware than some that it wasn't just the good education that we were privileged to get from Christ's Hospital, it was also the building blocks put in place by the 1945 Labour government that built a better society - ...

Re: Confirmation Service
I got confirmed at around 14 due to parental pressure (later becoming a confirmed atheist). My favourite bit at communion services in the chapel was where Rev Pullen (the Chain) drained the remnants of the communion wine in one gulp. I used to watch eagerly to see if he fell down the altar steps but...

John H might have a better recollection than me !

Re: Politics
Name the subtlety you're more capable of? Pick a cause you don't like. Then: Define the discussion so you can control it. Dominate the main media channels. Marginalise and belittle the views of the unwanted: apply logic; rhetoric and satire. Create false associations with other unpopular causes. Ta...

Re: Politics at CH
CH always seemed to me to be a remarkably non-political place, with most people following the principle: 'Politics: (if none, write Conservative)'. I also have the impression that interest in politics declined between the interwar years and the 1950s. In my lifetime there have, if I can count, been...

Blocking the traffic? Ooooh how radical. Are you sure UK Uncut isn't a typo? No. Is Ed Bell a typo? I was being partly facetious in case you hadn't guessed. Numbers in the street bringing things to a halt is better than doing nothing. I'm interested to see what OBs think about politics these days. ...

Re: Politics
Actually I wasn't advocating violent revolution - all social change in this country be it human rights, workers rights, franchise etc, has started with movements outside parliament and, assuming it has public support, it gets onto the statute books sometime later (when the politicians have finished ...

Re: Masters' Nicknames
Were we more inventive at Horsham with masters' nicknames in the 50s and 60s or were the masters more eccentric (not to say stark staring in some cases) back then, and rather invited it?

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury
Now that he is in final 23 for the game against Fiji we are all hoping that the game goes well and that he will rise from the bench in the second half to become the first CH boy to gain a full England cap ... unless anyone can correct me....... Am I way off or did Geoff Hines (Lamb B), forward, get...

I sometimes do direct action with UK Uncut in London. Are there any other OB Uncutters out there (apart from Mark Thomas)? All great fun - occupying premises and blocking the traffic in central London. Bring on the revolution
