Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel

Well yes my Happy Hertford does include some happy memories! But only 21 "happy " posts. The older I've got, the more happy memories I have. Maybe it's because I've resigned to acknowledging that I was way behind the general standard of cleverness, late in life. I deeply resented the gene...

Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel

Angela ... Katharine ... Shouldn't we be debating "happiness at Hertford" in the Hertford Memories section? That's where so many of us have written in detail of our experiences. My downfall and deterioration I feel sad about - entirely to my failure to cope with senior bullying and peer re...

Re: Non-Church of England OBs

I never told my parents that the choir turned east for the Creed! They'd have been horrified.

Re: Non-Church of England OBs

Jasmin Ansar was in my year and we were in 1's and 6's together. I always enjoyed talking about Islam with her, looked at her Koran sometimes and was interested to see her pray - she had permission to use the slatted airing room next to Wardrobe Room for the purpose. Facing east for Mecca! Jasmin le...

Re: How young did they start?

When I started in1964, there were two little nine-year-olds admitted at the same time in 1's. One was Ann Stevens, not sure about the name of the other little girl - they seemed tiny to a big eleven year old like me! But an intake of nine-year-olds must have been recent, because they were First Form...

Re: Housey parodies of pop songs, etc

[quote The coming of age of Hertford girls seems to have been gentle and supportive (pun intended) by the action of the Ward mistresses.[/quote] What??? The Housemistresses were a strange variety of weird women who probably had nowhere else to go, and no other way of earning a living. Maybe the most...

Re: New Forum Section - Hertford Memories

Yes. I left CH Hertford in no way equipped to deal with life. I've written before - Dr Jory, in front of whose desk I stood as some sort of an overweight freak, prescribed thyroxin for me, without any sort of blood tests. A bit slow, was I? Bad at maths? Obvious! I should have left after my abysmal ...

Re: I want a coatfrock!

The dress sounds absolutely lovely, Katharine - I'm sure you'll look gorgeous! And a coatfrock (going on my memories of Old Girl pictures) might have been a bit hot to wear to a dinner? What about your hair? Somewhere there exists a photo of my mother in the twenties with "earphones". She ...

Re: SPECIAL NEEDS AT CH

It is odd isn't it? It's a while since I read the Ruth Hall biography of Marie Stopes, but a few things do stick in my mind! Her really rather awful passionate poems to her younger lover Keith Briant. Her claim to be psychologically always 26 years old, and that she'd live to be 120. Her par...

Re: SPECIAL NEEDS AT CH

more important, the noted genetecist, birth-control advocate and author, Dr Marie Stopes had a son named Harry (b.1924) who fell in love with a girl named Mary Wallis, daughter of Sir Bames Wallis. Marie Stopes (the mother) objected strongly to the proposed marriage ...quite why the mother objected...

Hertford Old Girls Summer Picnic!

We had such a great time at the Stowe Summer Picnic last year! This year I wondered if Old Girls would like to have the Picnic chez Michael&me, as we are right in the middle of the country. I'm so delighted that loads of the girls have said yes! We've been making a plan on Facebook for either of...

Re: Bed-Wetting

Angela, I'm not sure how ´beatings, bashings or stern talks`would solve such a problem as it's obviously not something they do on purpose. I am talking about my ex's 60's reminiscences of Framlingham College, which sounds utterly devoid of any sort of sympathetic pastoral care. "There was no p...

Re: Bed-Wetting

My now-ex husband was at prep school with a chronic bed wetting child whom nothing - not beatings, nor bashings up, nor peer ridicule, nor stern chats with Matron, nor furious morning slipper-throwings seemed to help.

His name, disastrously, was Ledbetter. The poor child.

Boiled eggs in old-fashioned CH eggcups.Lightly boiled so had to be de-topped with old blunt teaspoons... "Lightly boiled?" The boiled eggs I remember must have been done for at least a *quarter of an hour. I distinctly remember the sulphurous whiff that accompanied their arrival at the t...
