Re: Housey Coat 'badge'
David Brown ['sejintenej'] wrote, à propos Eton's & Harrow's poorer placing on the scholars and exhibitioners lists: So much for ... weird uniforms  Also, John Wexler [alias the unpronounceable 'eucsgmrc''] wrote: I'm fairly confident that the word "exhibition" was used to mean so...

Re: Francesco's discussion of the history of 'scholars', note also that at some Oxford and Cambridge colleges – possibly also at other older universities – there are financial awards given on an annual basis for students who do well in exams, which are called Scholarships or (a somewhat lesser award...

BOB FINCH ARTICLE IN CHURCH TIMES
In The Church Times for 15 April – a publication which I suspect not all that many Forum readers regularly consult – there is a lovely article by Bob Finch called 'The Prince, Bishop, Mayor — and refugees', which opens with a breathtaking story about Prince Harry, Richard Chartres the Bishop of Lond...

Re: School Debates
To clutter a good thread about School Debates with personal chat: Incidentally, your surname [Battarbee] does ring a bell with me. Were you conected with the band, perchance ? Alas, No. I was too lazy to practise an instrument properly – had to give up even the piano for this reason, and still can't...

Alan James Ryan, FBA was Warden of New College, Oxford, and Professor of Politics at the University of Oxford and is currently a lecturer at Princeton University. says Wikipedia, though it's unclear to me whether he is actually now (2015) in the States or the UK. A political-science philosopher to b...

Re: Accents of Housey pupils
I arrived at Horsham in 1954 with a moderate Northern accent, coming from a teachers' family in Hull. I have no recollection of being mocked initially, but do remember quite vividly from a year later, talking about the summer hols, referring to a village in the Yorkshire Dales by its proper pronunci...

The Psalter in the Books of Common Prayer [BCP] PREdate (not postdate) the KJV/Authorized Version by about 75 years: they are Miles Coverdale's translation, from his (the first complete) English translation of the Bible, 1535, which Cranmer used in his first BCP in 1549, and which simply were retain...

Re: Reading to the dormitory
I had understood that PAJ's middle name was actually Augustine, but that he shortened it to the (traditional) abbreviated Austin when he adopted it for regular use to distinguish him from the other Mr Jones.

Re: Of course, after I left and after the demise of C.M.E.S., the fashion became the norm for long hair as seen in many later house photos. It would never have happened under Clarence's reign. I remember when in 1962 – so in the CMES Era – I was either Demetrius or Lysander (-dum and -dee!) in A Mid...

I also remember the portrait of Teddy Edwards – yes, a magnificent portrait, of a very lovable person. By coincidence – ? – the email which came in today from CHOBA announces an exhibition of Rubbra's work this summer, but sadly, from my point of view, in Exeter, too far away from Lincolnshire (curr...

Re: Jicker, Housey slang and individual Houses
Yes, I can confirm spadge in the precise meaning Michael cites. Bit of a puzzle how Swedish kalops – which immediately came to my mind too – could end up in English as collops , unless perhaps through the medieval Low German seafaring connection – some of the first English words that can be traced a...

Re: Jicker, Housey slang and individual Houses
My learned and courteous colleague Dr Scuffil comments first that "even by the 1950s, CH slang (esoteric words for ordinary things) was down to about four words ( kiff, flab, bocker, skiffage )", but then adds that "slang persisted longer in the Prep than it did in the Upper, and I he...

Re: Rev W Cochrane. (Corks!)
Hadn't looked in on the Forum for a while and was delighted to find this thread – but quite surprised at some of the comments. It all goes to show how personal and subjective our memories are, I suppose. In particular, I was surprised at the dissing of the music and art teaching, or supervision, or ...
