Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories th
Lil was a very stern strict woman of an unbending rectitude. But, a couple of years ago, MaryB told us something of her home situation. Belatedly, I felt very sorry for Lil. I believe she was Head Housemistress for a while. Does anyone know what the responsibilities of Head Housemistress were? AFAIR...

Re: Did we have half terms?
Long Sat! 10am to 7pm! I was fortunate enough to be a South Londoner who could get home for the day on Long Sat, and my parents always encouraged me to bring home a girl who wasn't going out for the day - maybe her parents couldn't make it, or she lived a long way away. My father always drove fast i...

Re: Palma Violets
"Palma" Violets? I looked them up to see if there is a significance in the spelling. Some contemporary pun, perhaps?
Eeeuch, the parma violet - a particularly weird tasting sweet!

Re: Fascinating documentary footage of 1930s CH
Vast amounts of food? I only remember the usual meals and tuck on 3 days a week, and that was only about 3 sweets a time.At tea we got alot of bread that would pile on the pounds. I hated Friday lunch of steamed fish followed by stodge pudding, hardly ate a thing if I could help it. In the 5th form...

Re: Fascinating documentary footage of 1930s CH
In Hertford durng my time (1956 - 62) we used to be weighed and measured at the beginning of each term. We were also inspected for posture and feet problems, and if necessary assigned to remedial sessions known as 'back drill' and 'flat feet'! I do not remember anyone who was overweight in spite of...

Yes, of course! Damaris Gwilliam, with the fascinatingly husky adult voice. My year, but ISTR Damaris was in 2's. Very white skin, hair black with natural soft curls.fra828 wrote:More unusual names: ?Damaris...Angela W, was she a contemporary of you in 6's?
I've never met another Damaris!

Well I know I have said so before, but, as a new girl, I thought that "Kerren" was actually "Karen" but pronounced in the accents of my new school.
Eventually, I saw Kerren's name written on the Sports Notice Board in the Cloisters. Aha!

Ditteke! That really is unusual! I can remember a senior Mina (Temple, was it?) in 3's when I was a new girl. I just thought it must be Wilhelmina. Bur Melissina is delightful. I was forgetting my peer, Janessa. Her parents made the name up - one wanted Janet and the other had chosen Vanessa. It see...

I suppose they just didn't seem such attractive names at the time?
Unusual names I remember from Hertford -
Drusilla
Doreen (an older lady's name for a very pretty V1 Form girl in 1964, I thought. I wonder if she continued to use it?)
Rowan
Robin

A sudden explanation for something I'd always remembered and about which I'd wondered! My computer always gives me a Yahoo page for starters. There was a thing about new babies being named after this year's Olympic athletes. "We must call him Usain!" There were so many Susans about my age ...

Re: Is There Such a Thing as CH Merchandise?
Ah, well now, Spoonbill. In 1's, our Junior House, an evil Housemistress, Millie, would sweep the curtain aside a) "to check you weren't having more than 3" of bathwater". b) in case of "having been in there for more than 3 minutes". c) and I remember her dragging a wet scre...

Re: Is There Such a Thing as CH Merchandise?
I'd like an appropriately-scented candle in a mock Gumption tin. You know, like the varieties you can find at a NT shop. I could lie back in my candlelit bath and revel in nostalgia for the wooden bath slat, the white canvas curtain on rings, my precious pot of Aqua Manda talc, the winceyette floral...
