Just thought of "Pinky" Palmer and "Ping" Vincent-Smith.

And I seem to remember Peter Higgins had some strange nickname. "Chicken" rings a bell.

And I am hallucinating in remembering "Rip" Kirby.

Come to think of it (and I know its not on topic, but what the heck), there seemed to be rather a lot of nicknames in the 70s:- "Rocker" Rae "Dolly" O'Meara "Bomber" Nicholson "Toad" or "Grolly" Newsome "Ubi" Atkinson "Kit" Aitken...

As I recall it was "Killer" Fry and "Bogey" Fryer.

Not too sure where "Killer" came from but I could take an educated guess at the other one

And yes, I believe that "Pongo" Littlefield did retire at the end of the summer term in 1972.

Spoonbill wrote:Oi, richardb. Does JamesF35 give you huge discounts at his Le Rocher Eslier gites en Bretagne?

Or does he quote punitively huge prices at you to make damnably sure you never come anywhere near him again?
Neither. Never been there. Never asked for a quote. Never had a quote.

Ah yes, it's coming back now - initials D.E. if my memory serves me correctly. Better not give his name on the forum but he may have been related to a certain family in Dallas. We are thinking of the same person. It's the same young man who I remember regaling people about the "love harness&qu...

Cant't remember his name but he was a few years below us. If I'm thinking of the right person, he also put pictures of aborted foetus's up on his dayroom workstation (what were those things called ?). Eventually there was some scandall involving him stealing some trainers or something from someone ...

i seem to remember that in my day one of the nurses in the infirmary had - according to popular gossip - been through a significant proportion of the senior end. And then there was the Spanish/Portugese kitchen worker who was supposed to have been active will lots of grecians. Amazing what the teena...

Yes, man-on-man rude behaviour was completely illegal in England and Wales until 1967, wasn't it? Is it now OK for gay teachers to be completely open, or would the school (and, indeed, some parents), still have concerns about this, whether justified or not? And how would this be affected by current...

Never been able to watch Zulu since it got flogged to death in Big School.

The rest were even more dire and even less memorable.

Drugs have been around for a long time. In my first term there were some very abrupt departures by pupils from the senior end as a result of drugs. This was Michaelmas term 1971 and they were hang overs from the 60s. Apparently been to music festivals where they were freely available. I remember bei...

Spoonbill Doesn't ring all bells to me. Are you sure it was during my time ? Maybe JamesF35 would be able to assist [i'm not suggesting of course that he was the culprit]. How about some initials as a clue ? Come to think of it, we did have one lad who had a strange obsession with all things adult. ...

Spoonbill - you are absolutely spot on. JamesF35 and I were both in LHA [72-74] and then Mid A [74-78]. To put you out of your misery, the answer is "probably". In those days milking was so widespread and such apparent fun to all us dysfunctional adolescents that most people engaged in it....

Sorry Spoonbill, doesn't ring any bells. As an educated guess, I would say that you probably left after O levels and did your A levels elsewhere. CH wasn't right for everyone and I can only express my own personal view that it gave me an opportunity that would never otherwise have been available to ...

Time to come out of the woodwork methinks. I too was a child of the CH 70s and my principal regret was that I did not avail myself of the cultural opportunities that it presented. I certainly don't regret going there for one moment as it equipped me for life far beyond our anything I could otherwise...
