Re: "More than a Brother" A H Buck and Edmund Blunden
Having said that though, considering the girls had only been there a short time, can you imagine if one of them had fallen pregnant...? The rules werent perfect, but the potential alternatives would have been worse. Surely...? I don't know what the ideal solution is, but in general I believe one sh...

Re: HUSBAND APPEAL ??
Everyone here (America) is obsessed with how 'our' legal system is the best... despite some pretty glaring signs it isn't, like multiple death row DNA exonerations, the OJ Simpson trial, and huge differences in incarceration times and rates by race. I think many countries' citizens think theirs is t...

Wow, that's quite a coincidence that there are two Michael Porteouses (rare name) who are both roughly the same age and both employed in private schools...

Re: All this is incredibly sad
And even these days the appalling jury system means that only 1/3 of rape cases end up with a conviction - which is only a small percentage of the rape accusations that are made, which in turn are a small percentage of the rapes that take place. The jury system is the only remotely positive, democr...

Points very well made, Avon. and above that you place a governance structure of doughties from the Corporation of London massively ignorant of their responsibilities, what do you expect? Yeah, throwing in a bizarre cobweb-encrusted senile feudal relic of an organisation on top of everything really d...

Re: Can we get transcripts?
As far as I remember richardb has said it's unlikely we'll be able to obtain transcripts, due to various privacy restrictions (?) and apparently court records are very sloppy, incomplete and untransparent in England (compared to the US) so the best chance would be to rely on a journalist or other co...

Re: REMOVAL OF CHOBA MEMBERSHIP
I think it's highly relevant, because she probably learnt her attitude from her father. Membership in the Freemasons in itself is evidence (not proof) of a certain attitude to power, i.e. a secretive and corrupt approach. The masons are the main vehicle of police corruption and are constantly involv...

Furthermore, Mr McCall was removed after being caught trying to lure a boy up to his flat. I have no knowledge at all of that. Are you sure? Yes, this has been discussed extensively in some other threads. There were several witnesses to an announcement to a large group of pupils by a former housema...

Re: REMOVAL OF CHOBA MEMBERSHIP
Do we know that Sillett was called to give evidence? If so, which trial? You're right, we don't know that. I had misremembered stuff from Karim's trial: The trial previously heard from an alleged victim who said housemaster Bob Sillett, a senior staff member, implied she would risk being named in t...

Re: REMOVAL OF CHOBA MEMBERSHIP
I now have some 2000, yes two thousand plus, pages of information concerning the abuse at CH, from all sorts of people from all over the world - courtesy of my original post and the internet. They do not paint a very good picture but my issue is not with the two Foundations per se but with the auth...

Is he homeless and living in the camper van but worried he will get moved on?
In Seattle there are now a very large number of people doing this, because the rent has more than doubled in the last 8 years. It's the fastest growing city in the US but there's not enough remotely affordable housing.

Re: Old Blue Scientists???
Since the 80s at least, the general attitude had been to look down on science, as far as I can tell. Certainly, a talented rugby player would receive more attention than a potential scientist. And anyway, what's the point, when someone with a chemistry degree will probably waste all that knowledge a...

Re: Why a teacher DOES NOT have to report abuse
An enthusiasm for corporal punishment implies a certain attitude to children and life in general, a lack of respect for their humanity which may lead to inertia or turning a blind eye when rumours of other forms of abuse surface...

Re: Dobbie's departure
It is a moot point to what extent the church should be responsible for his/her conduct. It is hardly reasonable to expect the bishop's enforcers to make constant active enquiry. It's a moot point not for this reason but because the church has consistently defended and covered up child abusers. Espe...
