Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Interesting... https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/woke-head-who-indoctrinated-pupils-at-32k-a-year-school-quits/ar-AAR3h9B?ocid=msedgntp Interesting indeed. I probably subscribe to the basic premise of Critical Race Theory in that, unintentionally at least, the laws and culture of a country such...

Re: Housey Soap

" Not sure about the answer to the question - but I am sure the soap has a more reputable origin." The statement that the soap was made at Housie is correct - at least in the late 40s/early '50s. It came from a building beyond the gymnasium and was an ecologically sound product from waste...

Re: Housey Soap

What soap is used in the dormitories of CH in 2021? I have no idea, but I strongly suspect that it is not the soap used in the 40s, 50s and probably for long after that period. Then the soap, most distinctive and called Housey Soap, was a crude, concoction, effective, though unattractive in appeara...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

I don't understand why Loringa is projecting me as spending all my time among middle class students. There has always been a proportion of middle class students at rock gigs, but in my experience outweighed by the working classes (as far as one is ever able to tell). My nocturnal experiences over t...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

As for the 'comfort zone', what bl**dy comfort zone? What the hell is that meant to mean...? Sorry, I assumed this was a commonly understood term. A comfort zone is a situation which requires minimal effort to sustain, and where the same, minimal input, yields the same results. Sometimes referred t...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

CH was, at most, 7 years of someone's life, so unless they're 8, they will have some practical experience of a world outside of it. Given that magical realism is, as far as I can tell, just a literary style, that world is indeed a real one. Of course, the "real world" has it's gatekeepers...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Problems for black or Asian pupils living in the real world (as opposed to the fairyland occupied by ex-public schoolboys). Last week the Guardian ran a story quoting an Afro Caribbean mum who complained that her teenaged son had been stopped by the police and asked to justify himself no less than ...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

For me, it begs the questions which other forms of perceived 'privilege' should the school cover? Just to note (as a white person from a low-income background), being white is definitely a privilege in this country; there is nothing alleged or perceived about it. Even a white person from a poor fam...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Interesting post, Simon, thank you. I had a quick look on line (including Wiki CH alumni, which describes Colston simply as a slave trader...) and was struck by the fact that, although said to have attended CH, he was from a very wealthy family. I didn't think there would be too many full fee payin...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Trying to digest the following (sample few paragraphs) from an article in today’s Telegraph: ‘Pupils at one of Britain’s oldest schools are to be taught about “white privilege”, as it says that no progress can be made from “within a comfort zone”. Students as well as teachers at Christ’s Hospital, ...

Re: Brexit

My immediate boss in London was one such - he simply could not go to to Head Office even after 2 years of language lessons. I was fortunate in having lived and worked in four other countries with three foreign languages before retiring so it was easy for me to assimilate. "Good moaning" s...

Re: Brexit

Very few countries understand hot water suet pastry. France understands the concept of "cold meat in a pastry wrapper", but while the meat texture is OK, the pastry isn't. I have enjoyed some exceptionally delicious patés en croute, and the pastry has been good. Not, it's true, actual hot...
