Re: NEW ANTI-PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOOK

Good old rockfreak, so consistent, always someone else to blame. Yes, I did watch the Radley series. I also visited Radley and met Dennis Silk on several occasions. Why rockfreak should cricise Dennis and wife for watching TV to see the election reults and Thatcher winning escapes me - after all, th...

NEW ANTI-PUBLIC SCHOOLS BOOK

Rockfreak must be in his seventh heaven this weekend with the publicaton of a new book which not only seriously opposes public schools, one of his favourite topics, but also cites, as a symbol of all that is wrong, no less a person that Dennis Silk - Old Blue, Senior Grecian, first-class cricketer, ...

Re: Who would you Shop?

During my time PINK was the senior housemaster of Prep B. He was certainly there in 1948-49 but I had no interest in Prep after I went to Lamb B so don't know how long he remained.

Re: 1950s HANDHELD CALCULATOR

Katharine, A good guess concerning the abacus, but as LongGone has shewn this little machine had a different genesis. But I do agree with you about the speed of skilled abacus operators. I well remember the Chinese shopkeepers in places such as Change Alley in Singapore who were really, really fast....

Re: 1950s HANDHELD CALCULATOR

Mike,
Many, many thanks. :D That is EXACTLY the information I was looking for.
I can remember being very envious of a contemporary who owned one of these.

1950s HANDHELD CALCULATOR

I am researching the development of handheld/desktop calculators and would be grateful for any help on an unusual mechanical device I remember being used by some boys at Housie during my time there - 1948-1955. I have searched Google but cannot find it, but a keyword would help. It fitted into the h...

Re: Bursaries Shmursaries

There are numerous 'odd' bursaries at CH, mainly associated with the City of London. One that isn't is the Oliver Whitby entry which is limited to two at a time from the Chichester area. This dates back to a bluecoat school in the Chichester area which became too expensive to run (I think in the 194...

Re: Olympics mania

"Emil Zatapek? Anyone remember him?"

Can't remember him, but do recall a chap called Emil ZatOpek. He won the 5,000 metres,10,000 metres, and Marathon at the 52 Olympics and by all accounts was a thoroughly nice man.

SamT says: "under the watchful eye of our host, an OB senior officer (whose name unfortunately I can no longer remember)."
Probably either Mickey Jarret or John Newman, or, possibly, Ray Bell.

Re: From the sublime to the ridiculous

sentinejej, You write: " There were no movie ratings.... " Are you sure that is correct? I seem to recall that all films were seen by the British Board of Censors, who then classified them into 'U' (=universal; i.e., could be seen by any age)); 'A' (adults; i.e., over 16 (maybe 18); and I ...

Re: Brexit

I have to admit that you have lost me. You said "No more PG Tips to be found anywhere". A positive and seemingly all-embracing statement, to which I replied that there are plenty of PG Tips on sale here in Devon (including half a shelf in Sainsbury's Newton Abbot at 1105 this morning - I c...

Re: Brexit

time please says: "No more PG Tips to be found anywhere!"

Not sure if this is meant as a joke or not, but I was in two supermarkets in Torbay this morning and they had absolutely no shortage of PG Tips.

Obituary: Squadron-Leader Robin Miller, RAF; Mid B 1950-56

I regret to record the death of my younger brother, Robin (R.W.A. Miller), who was in Middleton B from 1950-1956, whence he progressed to a very successful apprenticeship at De Havillands, Hatfield. Frustrated by colour blindness from achieving his aim of becoming a fighter pilot, he discovered that...

Re: Bring back proper rugby

Watched the Ireland vs Scotland match on Saturday (on TV, since you ask). A terrific game, but the goings-on in the scrum would have made Roman gladiators look like sissies!
