Re: Roger Martin - trial
I await Richard's legal viewpoint with interest. The deliberate infliction of force to a pupil is an assault. End of. And under the umbrella of 'assault' there is a long list of factors to be taken into consideration when it comes to assessing the seriousness of any particular assault, including in...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
Vilified, I don't like your name-calling or your attempts at legal landscape gardening. However, you're presumably entirely happy with the sustained campaign of provocation which called forth the name-calling (which I had already thought I'd be better look at again and consider editing out, rather ...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
Let's see if I am up to speed: Physical abuse can be heinous or valid depending on context. Is that the short summary? Hello....the search for clarity is commendable, but so is a realisation of the time to withdraw. Right, you have not been around much recently. But let's work on the logic construc...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
In my book, the perforated eardum incident was unfortunate, but most definitely not heinous, and I'm very pleased for Vilified that his career eventually went from strength to strength. CB: whilst I have thanked you for a sensible post and your praise for masters who were able to enforce discipline...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
All I can say in reply, vilified, that maybe teaching was not a career for you. Possibly the armed forces ? Even they are taught restraint these days. Your comment is unpleasant, completely unnecessary, and out of order. I did not and do not solicit your approval. Whereas it is true that I may have...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
I am disappointed, TMF. Thank you for your post, Vilified. Sorry that you are disappointed. The eardrum perforation incident occurred then through non-intense annoyance, more accidental, or unfortunate than not. (Though there have been outbursts on other occasions). Context is everything, accepted....

Re: Roger Martin - trial
I commend everyone on the forum for their tolerant attitudes. Nobody means to be too curious - just as nobody really means to hurt a child in a moment of stress. No doubt teaching is a terribly difficult and stressful profession - and all pupils deeply appreciate those teachers that strongly influe...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
I strongly suggest that this virtual-trial of Villified should end right now. He responded to the generalised assertion that all masters who left suddenly must, ipso facto, have been guilty of sexual abuse. He set out to prove that, while this may have been true in some cases, it was not always so,...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
A few points here have been raised, which I am happy to try to answer. 1. I much appreciate jakew's timely reminder, supported by stage crew, that I am here as a voluntary contributor. I was beginning to wonder! 2. As to TMF's queries: (a) References: Any sensible headmaster would not rely too heavi...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
What did you say was your reason for leaving Christ's Hospital? There was a difference then between the true departure reason and the reason given to the new employer. In your experience were such differences common at the time in the teaching profession? i'd think it was standard practice then and...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
He wasn't convicted of filming boys. That was relevant to show that Martin had an inappropriate interest in boys. He was convicted of putting the pupil in his [Martin's] own bed and then touching his penis. The boy was 10 and very homesick. That was demonstrably inappropriate, even in 1976. Thank y...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
One needs to be very careful about impugning the verdict in Martin's trial. He was unanimously convicted by the jury. You seemed somewhat less convinced as to the validity of the jury's verdict in my case, when invited to uphold it by 'yamaha', I seem to recall. Odd. It would help greatly to know w...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
With regard to Roger Martin, I was his assistant resident in Barnes A for the two years I was at CH, so was obviously in a very good position to know how he worked. I don’t have the exact dates to hand, but roughly 1974-76. First, he was utterly besotted with CH. He lived and breathed it and was dev...

Re: Roger Martin - trial
What did you say was your reason for leaving Christ's Hospital? I think I mentioned the stress of living in a boarding house in close 24/7 proximity to the boys, the desire for more privacy, the wish to teach at a higher level, and of course the appeal of the outdoors, the proximity of the Welsh mo...
