Who is the Barnes block named after?

Not all CH Houses are named after famous Old Blues ----- Barnes, for one, is named after an early Benefactor, whose portrait used to hang at the East end of the Dining Hall --- he has now been "Relegated" to the Counting House ! Never heard that one before, Neill. I've always understood i...

Re: BUCKLES

There's a long article about the Travers buckle (and the whole Travers bequest) in The Blue for July 1950, pages 196-200. A short follow-up piece appeared in the December edition, page 54.

Can't help with the Sacristan, I'm afraid.

Re: Michael Wilding

He was in Maine A between 1922 and 1928. His best friend is said to have been Patrick Parsons (same house, same dates) who became the B-movie star Patrick Holt. He wrote a little about his CH days in his autobiography Apple Sauce (published posthumously in 1982) but I'm afraid I don't recall any of ...

Our man in the Sudan?

The people of Southern Sudan have been voting in a referendum on whether to split from the North and become a separate country. According to the press report below, the person running the referendum in the state of Western Equatoria is one "Forojalla Sibrino". I suspect this refers to Sibr...

Re: Happy Birthday...... REX !

Only just seen this. Thanks to you both - I'm touched. Highlight of the day was lunch with my old house captain Phil Coad (Middleton B 1968-75) and (most of) his family.

The slow death of the Votum

Can anyone remember when and why the Votum was cast on the scrap heap? The rot started in 1970, when David Newsome became Headmaster. Under his predecessor Clarence Seaman, a small choir (I was in it in 1969) would stand on the Big School stage at a Junior Assembly in Michaelmas Term and teach the ...

Re: Birthday Honours

Old Blue MPs

...delighted to hear that CH produced a Labour MP. Seems that most OB's end up as Tories... Hannoir, may I quote something I wrote in The Old Blue two years ago, in an item about two influential Tory backroom boys, Steve Hilton (Ma A 81-83, La A 83-86) and Stephan Shakespeare (Kukowski, Pe B 68-75)...
