Robert Griffiths 'Postwarblue'

I am sad to note from the latest CHOBA newsletter that yet another well respected poster to this forum has passed away. RIP Robert and my sincere condolences to your family and friends should they read this. EDIT: A tribute from the obituaries section of the CHOBA website written by Robert's widow A...

J.R. wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2019 3:14 pm Oddly, although he appears to be after my time, the name is ringing a bell from way way back.

Could he have started at CH as a young master in the mid-60's ?? Seems unlikely though.
I would think he was there at the tail end of your time John.

Re: Neil Simms

I am very sorry to read this too. Like Robert Neil Simms taught me Economics and Politics and thanks to him I managed to gain an 'A' level in the subject. He was a very enthusiastic teacher with a passion for his subject and that enthusiasm and passion was infectious so you put the work in without r...

Re: Politics

I'm not getting involved too far ! As an 'Old Codger' from way back, I have always voted against, ( Brexit ). I have both personal and political reasons. Sorry JR - does this mean you voted against Brexit, ie remain? Your reply to Mid A 15's post indicates the opposite. Thanks I was confused at fir...

Re: Politics

Okay, so let's turn the subject back to Brexit which seems to be getting ever weirder by the day! Now that Boris appears to have sold Mrs May's deal to Parliament, albeit with a bit of a tweak on the backstop, The Farrago seems now to be calling on his wide-eyed loons to reject it. Has he seen the ...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

A disappointing end to it all for England.

As it transpired that match would have suited Joe Launchbury although I am not implying that his selection would have changed the result.

And not a recent word from Freaky !
I think he is still pumping out regular letters to 'The Guardian' and others.

Now the election has been announced he has more pressing matters than conversing with the likes of us I fancy.

Re: Politics

For those of us on the other side of the Atlantic, what is going on? Does BJ think an election would give him a clear majority? What is the rationale (if any) behind the support of other parties? I understand I may get very different answers from various members. I think BJ is thinking about BJ and...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

I learnt yesterday that no less than three of the England side, Farrell, Wood & Itoje, I think, went to the school I was at before CH, St George’s Harpenden, my father was school chaplain. I wonder whether this is the most in an England team from the same school, no brothers. Does anyone know? ...

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

Eddie Jones proved right today disappointing as it is both for Joe not to play and us not to watch him.

As they say in football though it's a results business and we miraculously got the result!

Bring on Wales or South Africa!

Re: Congratulations To Joe Launchbury

Got to feel sorry for Joe in that he is not really getting much of a look in this World Cup. I don't think any other country has the depth at second row that England does.

Meanwhile let's hope England finish the job against Australia in the second half.

Re: Did anyone know?

May I ask, out of interest, whether or not you were ever offered alcohol by Masters or frequented the Grecians Club? If I have misunderstood you I apologise in advance but I sense a disapproval of alcohol at CH regardless of any link to abuse. Is this revisionism in the light of terrible events or ...

Congratulations Gerald Davies

CH's former English teacher from the early seventies has been elected President of the Welsh Rugby Football Union.

I was lucky enough to be taught by Gerald and he was very supportive to me when I needed it.

Re: Did anyone know?

Agreed, as I said, you are entitled to your feelings and perspectives. It's not about being an enthusiast or apologist. It's about maintaining a bit of perspective. The guy taught for over 3 decades after. Yes, he is and was a paragon of virtue. In his own words: 'Durrant, of Milton Abbas, Blandfor...
