I completely share your dislike. Vibrato that seems to deviate a tone or so either side of the desired note makes me plug my ears. It may once have been heresy to say so, but I find listening to certain famous and well-loved sopranos such as Maria Callas unbearable. Luckily we are seeing a lot more ...

My arrival at CH was unusually traumatic because I came from a small "dame school" in Derbyshire, mornings only, where the highest number of pupils had been 12. To find myself in a school of 850 was a bit of a shock. Sorry, I'm digressing from the beatings and buggery again... Please excu...

The boys from the 50's (of whom I am one) had a theory that the school deliberately put bromide in the kiff to stop them thinking "impure thoughts"....... Sorry to hear about the attempted suicide - I cannot recollect the same event at Horsham - a murder yes, but not suicide. The bromide ...

Re: what's up?

i thought this thread was supposed to be all about punishments and homosexuality and stuff like that which looks at the dark side of CH, which was all of it as far as I was concerned. Back to the beatings and buggery, then...... The general feeling seems to be that at Horsham nefarious deeds among ...

...I forgot, of course, to put Derek and Clive Live in my list. Pure genius. You'll be familiar then with Dud singing "Jump" - the tune is an actual psalm tune (to be found in the psalters in Chapel). We had a jazz band called The St. Louis Jazz Band, and somehow got away with performing ...

It must have been great growing up here when groups like Queen and ABBA, etc. were at their prime. Yup, it was interesting all right. I should point out, though, that at the time Abba were DEEPLY uncool (they did win the Eurovision Song Contest, after all). None of us would have been caught dead li...

Music! Albums that kept you going during your school years.

OK, let's hear about people's musical tastes. What did you listen to on a wind-up gramophone in the day-room or on your iPod in your luxuriously-appointed, fully furnished living, study and personal development space ? Given the age ranges of the posters on here, this could be interesting or incompr...

Weltons beer - i haven't heard of that one - where's their brewery? It's on the industrial estate off Foundry Lane. They have beer launches there sometimes. I went to an evening there last year to launch the "Old Ale" for winter. Barbecue and Morris Dancers (!) in attendance, it was the p...

My housemaster in Barnes A (who was also an Old Blue) mentioned that when he was a pupil swimming "tackle out" was obligatory, as the (woolen?) material from swimming trunks used to clog up the pool's filters. "Brown bather" - what a strange name. Sounds like a "floater"...

We need a beer topic! But seriously, you beat the Scottish ale: Deuchars IPA from Caledonian Brewery Wayfarer IPA from Atlas Brewery :x now I'm thirsty and 400 miles away from the Scotland  This has almost become a beer topic, hasn't it? Nothing wrong with that. It's a subject close to many of...

How much did these buildings cost? Anyone have the figures?

And will they still be going strong after a century or so, like the original buildings?

The chaplaincy had a tendency to be occupied by somewhat suspect individuals - usually single males.. The suspect part I agree but single males - that's usual for a priest isn't it ? Catholics yes, Anglicans no (I presume the school God-squad are still Church of England types....). I'm glad to see ...
