Re: ALT+ for accents

I have to use them all the time for French and German; some in Italian too but they use accents much less. It is really tedious on a laptop though (without the number pad on the bottom-right of the keyboard) having to go "Fn + Insert/NumLk" then "Alt + numbers" then "Fn + in...

Re: Letters

And as any internet ready computer (are there any that are not?) can show TV programs you have to have licence for one of those too which is why many university students get done. They have a laptop but no TV and think they don't need a licence. Also a licence is attached to a person at a specified...

Re: Food glorious food

I do appreciate the input on this 100%, thanks. I take the advice on the other types of sauces and the water/cloth method of keeping milk cool, and the many other thoughts. I have lived in student accommodation for several years. Several of the places have lacked a particular fundamental component b...

Re: Food glorious food

Thanks for the replies  A few things to answer: Of course fridges haven't been around forever and people survived perfectly easily without them for centuries. But I suspect that in the days where not everyone had a fridge, the food on offer at the supermarkets reflected this. Nowadays, the ass...

Food glorious food

Here's my situation (and why I'm thinking of food so much!): I am staying in a building designed for students staying short-term (between 1 and 6 months - I'm here for 4 months in total, going home in late May). I have: no fridge and no oven. There is no kitchen in the building and no meals provided...

Re: Letters

But I'm not one to gloat. How much is it in the UK now, by the way...? £139.50 for colour and £47 for black and white. When I was in my first year at uni I took my mum's old black and white one as the licence was so much cheaper; it was the first time I'd ever had a TV in my bedroom and wit...

Re: Letters

Have grave concerns that I have been jinxed by Wuppertal and this thread - received a letter this morning from TV Licensing, with half my name missing (have double barrelled) accusing me of buying TV signal receiving aparatus from Argos whilst simultaneously failing to purchase a valid license. Her...

"Dear Good Sir, my dear friend, you have won the UK Lottery

I seem to receive these amusingly ridiculous spam emails on a weekly (and more often) basis from scammers trying to tell you you've won the lottery (usually either the British one of the Spanish one). Also the chldren of west African presidents who have recently died and left a fortune which you can...

Re: Daddly Longlegs & Slugs

Some people I know use shovels/spades and go on a violent but satisfying rampage round the garden hitting the slugs. But I can't bring myself to do that, too gory...I can't even swat a fly or wasp - not very nice creatures but I don't like all the guts spewing out! Slug pellets are an option but the...

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

This talk of megamoney and the short-notice building of various buildings reminded me: What ever happened to the "Art Quad" - the idea was drawn up in late 2000/early 2001 if I remember rightly - with the aim of replacing the temporary buildings ("Grange Hill") behind Old Science...

Re: Trying to find some translating work

I was bullied by someone with ADHD. Because he had ADHD, he was never punished and so the bullying never stopped. Regardless of his condition, he still knew perfectly well right from wrong and he knew what he was doing was completely wrong.

Re: Trying to find some translating work

With a physical condition it is obvious that special allowances need to be made otherwise it is literally impossible for the tasks to be completed. But I think it is well-documented that there is a greyer area over the two aforementioned conditions - some people are labelled dyslexic when in reality...

Re: Trying to find some translating work

A friend of mine happens to be dyspraxic, though he was only diagnosed about six months ago. His problem is organisation - always turning up late, forgetting obvious things, etc. Anyway, because of the dyspraxia, he now gets dispensation from the university and he is allowed an extra day or two to f...

Re: Trying to find some translating work

Wouldn't be 18 again if you paid me 10 times the minimum wage per hour!! I think all the above were in place Oct 07 so don't think any of that's changed since then! That's right! It's great to hear you say that! I get fed up of people telling you patrosnisingly that life's a breeze when you're youn...

Re: Trying to find some translating work

No employer will employ a person at more than the minimum wage that he can get away with. However, an idea. My younger son cannot do interviews; he never admits to being dyslexic and, so far as I know no employer has yet suspected. However, he gets jobs through temp agancies and each time the compa...
