Re: Brexit

I remain uncertain whether to bother. Both parents were from Ireland - one north, one south so I am technically an Irish (Republic) citizen but not registered as such. Apparently the registration (I have al the documents) can take two years and to get a first republic passport another year. And why?...

Re: Brexit

After many hours of hard thinking I came up with something!!! Arriving at Heathrow it was time again, I showed the UK passport and was asked by a quite stern official how long I was staying and did I have a return ticket. Bit strange when one is a citizen of the country. Arriving back in Sweden a q...

Re: Accents at CH Horsham

A thought for Keibat re Yorkshire origins. Did you have any problem understanding "southern" English? My son in law got posted to Harrogate and turned up with a Yorkshire - English dictionary. Looking through it I noted that about one third of the"Yorkshire" words were mis-pronou...

Re: Statement of Acknowledgement from CH

Robert; a simple "congratulations" to you and all those involved.
That final page with "who to contact if.." is excellent. I just hope it effectively warns any future would-be offender to go elsewhere..

Re: teaching relevance in later life

That experience matches comments by many others about learning a foreign language effectively in situ vs learning it academically in the classroom. I'll echo that. My French O level and my granddaughter's GCSE proved totally useless. I mastered it by living there and still delve into an 1826 editio...

Re: staff accommodation

Kit invested in a bicycle, in his case with a pedal on just one side to accommodate his wooden leg (Sejintenej will attest to this), while Kirby cycled around with the much-loved Chlorine draped around his neck when she was finally unable to hobble after her master. As mentioned elsewhere some pupi...

Re: CH role in Coronation

On the front page of today’s Daily Telegraph there is mention of a possibility of CH students having a role in the Coronation, holding the canopy while the King is anointed. Would this be a first? I saw it here https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-64461353 I think the paper is behind a paywa...

Re: A question regarding a punishment book

As a contemporary of Dennis, I am not sure that a conscious decision was taken that it was "unhygienic." I had a two mile walk/run to and from school and we only had one bath at home, and hot water only when the fire was on, so only had a weekly bath. Living "below stairs" my mo...

Re:

CH produced many many Scouts... Am surprised they haven't taken over the world yet. You would be surprised. 1959-60 two D of E Golds, 2 Queens scouts. Met the D of E at Buck house. One was a mainstay in the NHS in the west country. The other got mentions In the FT (front and back pages), involved i...

dodgy ads

Big big words but the links look very like the addresses used by scammers, perhaps the russians who have been so busy of late

Just found similar on further down. No idea what they are supposed to be advertising

Re: A question regarding a punishment book

It's been mentioned that in other houses the punishment time included changing from, and back into, full housey dress. By my time this was regarded in Barnes B as unhygienic - you worked up quite a sweat on a run like that - and the times were adjusted to permit starting and ending in games clothes...

Re: Accents at CH Horsham

My father-in-law (Eric Morgan) said that he lost his Welsh accent PDQ after arrival... Only dare to be different if you can take the attention. Re sejintenej's comment about Breton, a pissed Breton and similar Welshman could converse happily at any rugby international, and I think Cornish shares th...

Re: teaching relevance in later life

At the end of the week she claimed that she had learned more French in five days than in the years up to GCSE. That sounds about right. I moved to France towards the end of the first big pandemic lockdown, was in quarantine for a couple of weeks and for the next six months my only French language i...

Re: any jobs going?!

95% of the CVs offered to us breached some, often many of our specifications I think it's quite normal to apply to a job where you don't meet every single bullet-point requirement, as long as you tick the majority of them. The interview should be the opportunity for the employer to assess whether t...

Re: teaching relevance in later life

I live and work in France, and GCSE French did give me a little bit of a head start in terms of learning the language. Outside that though, the things I learned at CH that stayed with me weren't from the teaching. Interesting. I lived in France after I retired. One summer, days after taking GCSE Fr...
