Re: Reading to the dormitory

Dear Rockfreak: this sort of nonsense has been largely consigned to history in other western European states Alas, this is extraordinarily blue-eyed about other western European states – not to mention those a tad further east. Le Pen's National Front? The populists in the Netherlands? The Sweden-De...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

The problem, I submit [he says, somewhat prissily] with both shagging and screwing , tho' more so with the former, is that – to my Sprachgefühl, anyway – these words have and even more had very laddish overtones. Where laddishness has now blurred with lassishness, this probably doesn't matter any mo...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

Fidésien, no one, I think, has claimed that Lady Chatterley's Lover was ever read to a dorm –but there were copies in circulation, somewhat clandestinely. Reverting to the vocabulary issue, it strikes me that as I have gradually come to realize (and certainly didn't know 50 years ago) the males of t...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

For what it's worth, and without implying any stance on Avon's other posts, which I haven't read – of course Lady Chatterly's Lover is about class, and emphatically so. And of course Sir Clifford's invalid state is a metaphor for the decadence of the upper classes. Which doesn't disqualify the point...

Re: Reading to the dormitory

What an unexpected, and delightful, contribution from AliLiz! Back to reading in the dorm: When I was, I guess, still only 11 or 12, we were having Dracula read to us, and it must have given me a nightmare, and I must have foolishly mentioned this my mother, who promptly contacted the housemaster (m...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG

Cathcing up after an absence, I came across John Hopgood's contribution: As a Ba B contemporary of Keibat, I can only remember Flab and Kiff. His memory is obviously better than mine, so maybe he remembers where my nickname came from, which I inherited from Michael Hilliard, I think. My brother inhe...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG

I was in Barnes *B* from the mid 50s to the early 60s, having started in the Prep. Flab for butter, yes; and crug for bread. Muck rings no nostalgic bells (whereas in the 2010 sections of this thread, re-encountering spadge hit me quite powerfully!) - nor does slice . So BaB must have 'gone slice ' ...

Re: CH in Art

I actually have a painting by Conrad Clark, which I bought off him as a Christmas present for my mum, and have now inherited. 'Fish ghosts': two spiky fishes with their skeletons showing, swimming in opposite directions, on a generous backing of swirling blue paint. – This brings back good memories ...

Re: Boys’ favourite books (& their pages) in the CH Library

I watched the repeat of 'The Graham Norton Show' last night, two of his guests, both of Afro origin were quite happy talking to each other, regularly using the 'N' word. Weird, or what ?? Was that the same episode with Kate Winslet, one of the topics being The Mountain Between Us ? (which my wife an...

Re: Clean clothes at Horsham in the 40s & 50s

Michael Scuffil recalls: My recollection is that we had clean underpants only once a week (but I may be wrong). (YUK, especially as opportunities for intimate washing were limited.) Bands and socks twice. Yes. Sadly so. I can visualize, curiously vividly, the midweek (Wednesday) bundle of socks and ...

Re: Clean clothes at Horsham in the 40s & 50s

I was at Horsham from 1954 to 1963, and clearly remember that these reports are correct: bands, underpants and socks twice weekly, shirts only once – unless you got acid over it in the Science School, as happened from time to time. The bands (and presumably underpants!) were often pretty yucky by th...

Re: Penguin-Bashers: Did They Really Exist or Were They a Myth?

On fees: My mum was a war widow, working as a schoolteacher. At one point she got a pay rise; her income tax went up, maybe something else as well, and then my means-tested fees for CH. She would have ended up worse off than before, so she wrote to CH explaining – and my fees went down again. I don'...

Re: Penguin-Bashers: Did They Really Exist or Were They a Myth?

Update to immediately previous post: I asked: So could Forum-posters indicate the Bashers decade in guestion? Sorry, I'd got stuck on the first page of the thread. It's now clear. Perhaps I'm rather glad i didn't live in the UK in the 1970s! (or 80s or 90s or 00s) I also have no recollection at all ...

JR wrote: The so-called penquin bashing in Horsham itself, and around CH must have become aproduct of the 70'a and thereafter. I cannot remember any such incidents in the 60's near the school.
