Re: CH Tuck Shop

What are/were space pencils? Here is the only picture I could find on Google (it's quite a small picture): http://www.brackenbankstores.co.uk/acatalog/pencils.jpg They're very sugary long cylindrical 'pencil'-shaped sweets. The inside of them is just a pure sugary fruity mélange (there are many di...

CH Tuck Shop

Today in Venice I saw some space pencils in a sweet shop. This instantaneously took me back to my junior years at CH when I used to go to the tuck shop regularly to buy these strange and apparently rare culinary delicacies. Yum yum. :tonqe: Actually the first several times that I bought space pencil...

Re: disused railway lines

There is a gate on the London platform that is normally open that still gives access to the old Guildford platforms that are still there but very overgrown... That's interesting. When I was at CH from 1998 through to 2005 I always saw that gate but there was always a very fiercely worded sign, &quo...

Re: Entrance to CH - Picture

For all those who don't know, that entrance is now on the back of Big School... Buried under acres of scaffolding? No, it's there for all to see, in the centre of the back of the building, opposite music school. (Edited by me: oopsy, of course, under the scaffolding that's there at the moment! I ha...

Re: Wretched bl**dy yanks!

SHAME on whoever leaked the news. They clearly cared more about breaking a story than the safety and security of all the allied soldiers in Afghanistan. I feel genuinely sorry for Prince Harry. I saw that interview where he said it was about as normal a life as he was ever going to lead, and now it'...

Re: disused railway lines

...About 2 miles outside Burford are the remains of a village that was decimated by the Black Death. All that remains are lumps in the ground and a solitary chapel (St Oswalds, I think it's called). However, inside the chapel are numerous well preserved wall paintings dating back to (and documentin...

Re: disused railway lines

When I lived in Oxford I had a book of historical walks which led me for miles through villages left abandoned by the black death etc. Fascinating discoveries on the way. Cool, that didn't include The Ridgeway by any chance? There are some spooky ghost-towns/villages in that forest! It's just off t...

Re: disused railway lines

This thread reminds me of really happy summer afternoons on my Deps and Grecians. Me and a couple of friends used to go walking on the abandoned railway line south of CH - what is now the Downs Link. It was simple to get out of the school site without being noticed - we'd just get a Horsham pass so ...

That sounds fantastic! It must have been spooky but exhiliarating, especially if alone.

I found myself laughing throughout reading his fascinating encyclopaedic description of poisonous gasses, even including detailed references just for our erudition. Highly amusing!

Re: Compulsory DNA database?

Whatever the downsides - and there are significant downsides - these well-known serial murderers whose names don't deserve to be given any more attention would have been caught straight away and people's lives would have been saved with such a database. Can anyone give a decent reason why the slight...

Compulsory DNA database?

From BBC News: Mandatory DNA database rejected Calls to put the DNA of every UK resident on a national database are impractical, the government has said. A senior police officer has argued for a universal register, after two killers were convicted on DNA evidence. Discuss... I can't decide personall...

Money and assets should be in the hands of the many, not the few.
