Clive James is a big fan of Keith Douglas. Here he is reading one of Keith's poems:

Amicable Society of Blues

From the school website: "1629 The Amicable Society of Blues is formed (the oldest dining club in the world still in existence)" I'd never heard of this organisation before a few days ago, certainly not whilst I was a pupil at CH. Anyway, it seems that I'm now the proud owner of a medal pr...

Re: CH Wall plaque/crest...previously for sale of ebay...

Just been reading this interesting article about Skellingthorpe in Lincolnshire, where Henry Stone is buried, and the town's links with Christ's Hospital.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skellingthorpe

It mentions that a number of buildings there have these plaques on their gables or wall.

There's a guy on eBay trying to sell an RMS badge for £3,000: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Christs-Hospital-Nautical-School-RMS-Badge-Silver-with-wood-presentation-box-/151354523639?pt=Antiques_Silver&hash=item233d6ebff7 He listed it for £5,000 initially. When I've seen these sold on eBay or auctio...

How sad.

I will always remember him extolling the virtues of Wagner, playing it loudly from his Leigh Hunt window, and the speed that he walked around.

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

I've got a Bible and a Prayer Book, no boxes. I'm not sure if the Prayer Book was given to me at my Confirmation though or on leaving in 1982. I'm pretty sure the inside of my Bible has a label with the following: I charge you never to forget the great benefits that you have received in this place, ...

Jo - When did your lads start going to CH?

So parents now have to buy their kid's shoes, and Dr Martens are the recommended style. Since when I wonder?

Re: Dr Martens 1461

The newspaper article contradicts the Wikepdia entry on Dr Martens shoes. Wikepedia states that, “The first Dr. Martens boots in the United Kingdom came out on 1 April 1960”, [my emphasis] which is hardly surprising since they were invented immediately after World War 2, by a German in Germany.
