Yes, this sad episode is the subject of the first chapter of Christ's Hospital: The Last Years In London by C M E Seaman (ThA, BaB 20-27, Headmaster 55-70). Unfortunately I can't find my copy just now, but I remember the story is told with shrewdness and compassion.
