Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

I wasn't aware that house captains could walk on the grass - I don't think this is the case any more (it wasn't allowed when I was there anyway). I was writing that in the assumption that no pupils at all are allowed to walk on the grass.

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

While I agree that outside/garden privacy may not be particularly good, all the staff houses I went in (some in King Edward's Road/Close, Pe B and LHB attached houses, flats at the back of the houses, and one of the huge new houses on backash), are excellent quality inside, I might even say luxuriou...

Re: Postboxes

For classic declarations of total ignorance / stupidity there is a TV show which SWAMBO is addicted to called "Judge Judy" which, it is claimed, is real courtroom stuff as it happens. Sky channel 118. You won't laugh; it's sickening. Almost as sickening as the Darwin Awards but at least t...

Re: Postboxes

Apologies if I wasn't clear - I would in no way expect people to learn and know where everywhere is (that is a matter of personal interests), but it is the people that simply don't care about anywhere other than their redneck village who annoy me! Yes, those youtube videos of people in the st...

Re: Postboxes

A few months ago a friend in Ireland sent me a letter addressed to "Hartland, Devon, United Kingdom ". It went to "Hartland, North Dakota, United States ", before being returned to sender. And my postcode was on it! On the second attempt it got to me :) The UK Post Office is lit...

Re: Postboxes

Of course I've complained and of course they haven't bothered to get a reply to me. Just a thought - http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum specialises in consumer rights issues like the one you described. --- A few months ago a friend in Ireland sent me a letter addressed to "Hartland, De...

Re: Postboxes

I find Her Majesty's Mail is regularly deliberately tampered with, especially parcels. My mum sent me chocolate at Easter and the wrappers has been torn open and no effort had been made to hide this or to put it back to how it was. That's just one example of numerous ones that I've found upon openi...

Re: Englishangel has got it right!

Further to David's remarks, Greenslade should get out, full stop. Has anyone been to North Devon to see what is lovingly known as Greenslade's Folly? A large awkward roundabout with a number of unsightly metal rings supporting(?) lumps of slate. I was told last week that the slate is already beginn...

Re: Re:

I strongly suspect that is south Devon...and after a Google Maps search it indeed is  I live on the rugged, isolated north coast near the northernmost border of Cornwall. Due to my village being on two coasts (facing north and west, right on the point where the coast changes direction) there i...

I'm afraid I have to challenge! I found a different article about the same thing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/devon/news_features/2003/devon_best.shtml Admittedly it is from a while ago and I am biased as I live in the "best county in which to live" according to the article. Nevertheless it's sti...

Re: End of Lent Term - another Post Mortem

Life may have been harder in the 'old days' but it doesn't mean that the children now have it completely easy, and they shouldn't have to feel guilty just because people had it worse 40 years ago - I think that is irrelevant to today and the topic discussed by Huggermugger. I was often treated this ...

However, even within Norway it used to be that people from one valley often had difficulty understanding people from another valley because communications were so difficult. On top of that there were language changes officially inspired so even words changed. Wuppertal will understand how I was con...

Re: You've all had

It's interesting...when you start as a beginner, English is one of the easiest languages in the world for foreigners to learn at its basics (no genders, no adjective endings, barely any verb conjugation, easy plurals...). But when you get to a more advanced level, it's one of the hardest languages ...
