Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

Mid A - it's good to have a bit of empathy! I used to support the BSB in the days when I had an income instead of a truncated pension - in fact my own daughter was a BSB presentee. It is a valid point that the BSB is run by Old Blues who 'understand the ethos'. I am inclined to blame the current Hea...

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

Thanks for pointing that out, JR. I obviously had not read that far in the letter - mea culpa! It is unusual for me to glance at the first paragraph of a letter and then discard it - something I am constantly nagging my husband about!

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

Perhaps some of us need to give some serious thought to defining exactly what the 'great benefits' we received were - not just vague generalities like 'an education which my parents could never have afforded otherwise'. The things which stick mainly in my mind are not subjects we were taught, but mo...

Re: The Charge - has it been changed?

I concur. I left Hertford in Summer 1962 and my Bible was in a maroon box which eventually fell apart - I actually used to use the Bible! No prayer book, as I never reached the dizzy heights of Monitress.

Re: Politics

Rockfreak, you don't seem to be getting the message! In similar fashion to the average election, we seem to have one side (in this case one person) obviously itching for a fight; it doesn't seem to matter what the fight is about just as long as tempers can be raised for some reason or other. Meanwhi...

Re: Bursary information

Perhaps the headmaster, who believes he is running a business rather than a school, is trying to make it as difficult as possible to find any useful information, in the hope that those who are actually in need of assistance will decide not to bother!

Re: Bullying & Abuse - Take II

I think that anywhere that large numbers of teenagers form a community there will be bullying of some kind. Anecdotally CH Horsham seems to have been milder than many other large schools, at least in physical terms. At Hertford bullying took a more psychological turn, I suspect with longer term cons...

Re: Happy Birthday Frances Grogan

Thank you JR. At the moment we are in the midst of a major 'domestic' - Himself not only forgot, but demanded to know who was sending me flowers - in fact it was my daughter and they were addressed to both of us because he is about to go into hospital, but he didn't actually wait for an answer. Oh j...

Re: Pathe news 1930's

Katharine, I agree - good to see the girls. Not too clear a picture, but were they wearing the famous 'coatfrocks' which you were recently pining for? If so, they may well have been the same actual garments that were still being passed down when we wore them in the 50s and 60s, by which time they we...

Sorry Katharine, you are quite right - just another example of the galloping senility - I seem to have had it for years!

Re: table manners

Definitely not denim; it was the same blue material used to make 'brush and comb' bags which hung on our numbered pegs in ward cloakrooms, marked in cross-stitch with ward and locker number.

Re: Changing Clocks

Sorry - this is definitely off topic, but .......... Katharine's tongue on cheek comment produced an instant flashback to the preparation for my daughter's wedding reception in her back garden; five of us 'girls' - all Hertford Old Girls - were busy setting up, including all the electrical stuff, wh...

I'll second that. I also really miss Neill's contributions. And Ajarn Philip - any news of him?
