Re: John Mason, teacher, circa 1976

Well, yes, I remember that there was some sort of harness involved, but to the bystander it still looked pretty death-defying and almost certainly it was all rather primitive by today's rigorous standards, which would probably involve the wearing of a crash helmet and a foam rubber suit, with the st...

Re: John Mason, teacher, circa 1976

Bring on the Whore Bring on the Whore Bring on the Whore of Babylon. And Ian Cook/Edgar Newman (?) taking it in turns to play Cain on alternate nights and climbing up a rope almost to the ceiling of the auditorium, spotlit, then swivelling around in the air like trapeze artistes. I've a sneaking fe...

Re: John Mason, teacher, circa 1976

Paul If the guy in the white suit is definitely the John Mason of Fruup, then to my mind there's no resemblance at all and I don't think that's just to do with my powers of memory. Our John Mason looked rather refined and a bit like he'd just stepped out of a stained glass window; this other John Ma...

Re: John Mason, teacher, circa 1976

He had surprisingly long hair for a CH master of that time. Longish dark hair. And I remember him carrying his guitar case, very smartly dressed. In fact he always looked immaculate. Very handsome in a rather ethereal way. I think perhaps he and Tom Jeffers performed on classical guitar together on ...

Re: Question for former band members

It's probably worth mentioning that there's also a so-called 'marching' version of the baritone horn, which tends to be seen in the US rather than in the UK. It's horizontal like a cornet, rather than vertical like a tuba, tenor horn or euphonium. It's highly likely that that's what Katherine's frie...

Re: Question for former band members

In the UK, baritones are more the preserve of brass bands rather than military bands and are played alongside tenor horns. In the US, they're definitely used in marching bands, along with almost every other instrument known to mankind except (possibly) harps. US marching bands tend to be everything ...

Re: Question for former band members

It's like a tenor horn, but with a deeper voice. As for the CH band, try this, pasted from https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmXoypizjW3WknFiJnKLwHCnL72vedxjQkDDP1mXWo6uco/wiki/Military_band.html Christ's Hospital Band Formation Format Drum Majors (who do not conduct the band but are there purely to direct march...

Looks like I've missed something, then. Whoops.

I figured that ERM hadn't been accused of anything, or why wouldn't this thread be in the Historical Abuse & Related Discussions section?

Re: Photograph of Ernest Richard McCall

It remains unclear to me just what alleged offence this person is believed to have committed. Isn't he merely a man about whom there were rumours and nothing more? Until such time as someone actually goes to the police about something solid relating to ERM, it doesn't quite seem right to tar him wit...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

If justice has been done, one has no choice but to approve, because justice is of paramount importance. But let’s not forget that in many ways Roger Martin was a very sound man who had a positive impact on many young lives over several decades. That can never be erased. Every word of the ‘Roger Mart...

Do You Tell People That You Went To Public School?

I generally don't mention to anyone at all that I went to any sort of public school and that's pretty much how it's been since I left education. Perhaps it's partly because I worry slightly about other people's ill-informed preconceptions about private schools and the people who've been to them, but...

Highly inteligent, as are their cousins in the bird world. They also have their dedicated keeper to care for their welfare.

Would that be you by any chance, John? One of the many strings to your bow? I know you don't like to boast about your achievements.

Re: The band leading the People’s Procession at the Cenotaph tomorrow

Did the band bother going back to Horsham overnight?

Or did they sleep rough with their instruments under railway arches in King's Cross?

The school's not made of money, you know.
