Re: Freaky in the FT

Today I get lead letter in the Guardian. About the modern phenomenon of the Tory party roundly insulting the electorate (Lee Anderson and the 30p meal). Generally it used not to happen in the post WW2 years because you don't really want to be slagging off the people you hope will vote for you, but a...

Re: How Much Kit Brought Down From Newgate Street Still Exists?

I never knew that Kit was around in the days of Newgate Street. He was obviously much older than we thought. What did he bring? Well Banker Brown for a start, plus all sorts of other exotica. His wooden leg, Corks, Elvis Carter and his pop records. Maybe Col A veterans of my era have other items to ...

Re: Freaky in the FT

And again! Another of my letters goes into the FT - this weekend's edition. And guess what? It's about, wait for it, public schools! Rishi (several miles up my own backside) Sunak and his noble £100,000 gift for bursaries to Winchester College. But there's a paywall on the FT and I'm afraid you'll h...

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway

That is just so sad that you were orphaned while at CH. I seem to remember that you've spoken about it before and that the school thought that by not talking about it too much you wouldn't be reminded of it. I was contemporary with you and remember the Fantle affair and wondered how he coped with it...

Re: Re-educated by Lucy Kellaway

One of the things that surprised me about Lucy Kellaway's schools was the attempts to teach economics to 14 and 15-year-olds in what appear to have been challenging classes. And not just very broad, simplified principles at that. GDP, the Demand Curve, Exchange rates and whether the founder of Bet 3...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Lucy Kellaway's book Re-Educated is well worth reading but she also crops up on videos on You Tube on the subject of corporate bullsh*t. And this is entertaining too. She spent much of her time on the FT writing a column featuring a fictional CEO called Martin Lukes who posted pompous, overblown, co...

Re: Telegraph article: Pupils at prestigious public school will receive lessons in 'white privilege'

Lucy Kellaway has some experiences to relate in her book Re-educated. Teaching in a multi-ethnic school in Hackney she inadvertently speaks of something attempting to be whiter than white. "There was an intake of breath. The old-fashioned phrase which had seemed so innocuous as it formed in my ...

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

Sorry about repeating my post. I noticed a typo in it, re-edited it, and it came up again in revised form. Me and computer technology still have a lot to learn.

Re: Michael Cherniavsky

For all those who are fascinated by the flush of talented CH products in the 1950s who went on to Oxbridge and greater things, you might be interested in Alan Bennett's musings in his book 'Untold Stories'. "That there were schoolmasters who were larger than life, whose pupils considered thems...

Re: Was Rock 'n' Roll Banned at CH in the Fifties?

Yes, that's right. Jazz was acceptable. The book 'The Jazz Scene' was written under the pen name of Francis Newton (jazz critic for the New Statesman, I think) who was actually Eric Hobsbawm - left wing political writer whose book is an excellent socio-political resume of the development of jazz and...

Re: Freaky in the FT

Was the ERM a disaster? For us maybe. But most other countries survived their stay and the ERM went on to become the Euro. The problem was that we went in at too high a rate. Rather reflecting the mistake that Churchill made as Chancellor in 1925 when putting us back onto gold at an overvalued rate....

Re: Freaky in the FT

Rockfreak, That is both very unpleasant and uncalled for. If you cannot do better than that, I suggest that you keep your opinions to yourself. David  Thatcher herself was both unpleasant and uncalled for. She caused two of the worst recessions and unemployment since the 1930s and there were...

Re: Freaky in the FT

The trouble with Thatcher was that, while she was lying in the morgue before burial, no-one managed to sneak in with a sharpened stake and a mallet and finish her off. As a result she rises at dusk every evening and flies the land biting people on the neck, and this is why her unworkable ideas conti...

Freaky in the FT

He's done it again, only this time it's the lead letter in the Weekend FT - "The interest rate is irrelevant if consumers are not in the mood". A first for Freaky and maybe for CH. It questions the ability of the Bank of England to deal on its own with inflation or recession. Unfortunately...
