Re: Roger Martin
ok - in that evidence of the totally separate management of the 2 organisations i can see why ex leaders (some of whom left the school under a cloud) could still end up on a scout camp during the holidays and outside the school grounds without any control or input from the school As foureyes states...

Re: Roger Martin
However, I distinctly remember you called a house meeting I am guesssing like in 1993, and you explained to us that our Maths teacher Mr *****, was being marched off the because he had tried to lure a boy up into his flat. I was in the unnamed teachers set for maths (set 6 or 5 I believe) so I reme...

Should there be a separate sub-forum for the “historic abuse” threads?
I ask because there are (very occasionally, at the moment!) other interesting topics posted in the “CH Stuff” forum, which get drowned out by the threads regarding the historic abuse and current trials. This is not intended to diminish the importance of the topic, but rather to reflect it by giving ...

Re: Did anyone know?
AFAIK Corporal Punishment stopped before I started, although I did hear the odd rumour of boys being struck. It had definitely stopped before the merger The cane had definitely gone, but Shippen for one still enjoyed a good slippering in the immediate post-merger years - though I might add that thi...

Re: Ampleforth and Downside
As it happens I know someone who boarded at Downside during the relevant period. In order to safely uphold the family tradition, he has resorted to the rather drastic - in my view - action of moving to Somerset, so that his kids don't have to board.

Re: Karim's sentence hearing
I expect there are rather more journalists amongst the membership of the Queens club than that of the Pickering Rotary Club, which might go some way to explaining the difference in levels of interest.

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer
Yes, I was approached again later in life by a good friend unconnected with CH. I didn't sign up, thanks in part I suppose to CH-fostered prejudice about freemasonry. What he suggested at the time was that the real reason for all the secrecy was to conceal the fact that it was really just a drinking...

Re: Housey Rap, recent convictions
That’s very conspiracy-ish. I think the lyrics, language etc were pretty out of order, particularly in a time when you could get punished for swearing (and quite right too)...so it’s as simple as that why distribution was prevented. Fair enough I think? I think any school today would strive pretty ...

Re: Housey Rap, recent convictions
Presumably an age thing. But personally I believe the subject to be so serious that this type of post should not be here. Understood that you consider the reproduction of the lyrics to be inappropriate. That said, some of the content of the lyrics is very relevant to the question of who knew what i...

Re: Freemasons and questions to answer
I do remember receiving an "introductory VHS" from the masons a few months after the Leaving Service. I suppose this was a bit like an "infomercial", but in the absence of QVC, the masons had to resort to the Royal Mail. I didn't sign up but I was aware of a few contemporaries th...

Re: What was the attraction?
I have a friend who teaches at a well-known public school (not CH) but doesn't live in. I get the impression it is quite hard work; he has to drive over there early in the morning for chapel, teach during the day, then hang around until 7 or 8 in the evening to supervise prep a couple of evenings pe...

Re: House structure
He was utterly terrifying to me as a 12 year old girl, although I’m fairly sure he didn’t mean to be. As a more general musing, it must have been strange for teachers who had taught only boys for decades to suddenly have an invasion of teenage girls. You know, I think I remember him saying this out...

Re: House structure
He left that year I think. I knew the lyrics of the Housey Rap well (I believe I still have a cassette tape copy somewhere) but I hadn’t realised he was a literal w****r. Well, my only source for this is the Housey Rap, which I imagine is referring to his personality rather than his habits. On the ...
