Re: Poor disciplinary C.H. staff

Cecil Cochrane ( Corks, hence his nickname ) certainly liked his tipple as did Hector Buck. These two together with Kit Aitken had regular drinking sessions, usually in Kit's study latish in the evening, when a general" do not disturb us" arrangement was announced in advance. I have commen...

Re: Rex Roberts Maths Master

Thanks to Claud Rains I have now traced the above named 's dates at C.H. as April 1969 to July 1971. He was a Junior Housemaster in Maine B when it was a junior House.

Rex Roberts Maths Master

I noted on the internet the death of the above named on 30.3.2014.
I know that he was on the staff for some three years and attended Eastbourne college as a pupil.
He was born in 1939, Does anyone know his dates on the staff ? Around late nineteen seventies I would think.

Re: Poor disciplinary C.H. staff

One could easily tell the difference between good and bad disciplinary masters merely by the amount of noise emanating from the classroom. I recall J.E. Massen from next door coming into Bazley's classroom on some pretext and actually reprimanding him for his obvious lack of control. The former was ...

Poor disciplinary C.H. staff

Recent correspondence on the Memorable Sermons thread refers to a nineteen twenties master who had a very poor disciplinary record in class. I can recall two such masters from my time, G,H, Bazely. Modern Languages and Rev. H, Poole Mathematics. Bazely had the classroom next to J.E.Massen, between w...

Re: Day Pupils

There were three Evans boys in Coleridge B. in the nineteen forties.
D.C. 39-47 and M.C, 41-48 were brothers and sons of the Clerk, Roger Courtenay Evans. BB 12-17. they also had a sister at Hertford, G. Evans Ward 4, 42-49.
The third was D.L. Evans, no relation, Prep B 40-47.

Re: Day Pupils

J.H. Carter (PA 49-56) lived in Horsham and may well not have been a day boy. P.H. Bates was in Prep A and Coleridge B 1941-48, not Thornton A, and emigrated to New Zealand. He died some years ago. The Bates family lived in King Edward's Avenue in a tied CH house. Does anyone know if the Evans broth...

Day Pupils

Does anyone have any information about day pupils who over the years at Horsham were generally those with parents who taught or were employed at the school and therefore lived in the family home either on C H premises or nearby in Horsham? I am thinking of the offspring of J.E.Massen, Hon. D.S. Robe...

My apologies for the wrong title of this thread. It should of course have read Admission of new pupils.

Admission of new boys

Has it always been and is it still the case that the admission of new boys at the start of the Michaelmas term is always a day or two after the rest of the school ? The much smaller Lent term intake was always on the same day as the others.

Re: Old Blue County cricketers

Yes, S.G.Whittingham is the first Old Blue to appear in first class cricket since J.A. Snow in 1977. He made his first class debut in 2015 for Loughborough University v Hampshire at Southampton scoring a duck and taking one wicket in his only appearance.

Re: What happens to ‘retired’ Housey coats?

When I joined C H. in September 1941, incidentally a time just after clothes rationing had been introduced, I am sure that we all had two Housey Coats issued , one of which was known as "Sunday best". These were kept in a special room and presumably only used on specific occasions. In 1942...

Re: Wanted cerca 1946

Some time back there was a thread on the School Rule Book c. late nineteen thirties. Did this contain a list of places that were out of bounds ? I seem to remember that the Bird Sanctuary on Big Side, near the cricket pavilion had a large notice at the entrance. Also the area behind the Wardrobe at ...

Re: Wanted cerca 1946

Was Shelley Wood completely out of Bounds at the time ? I recall going there for a picnic with my visiting parents in 1942. At least no-one apprehended us ! The trees or most of them were cut down and the wood presumably used for other purposes. Certainly the School Cadet forces used to go there for...
