Re: From the sublime to the ridiculous

The Indian Army mental hospital was at a place called --- Dulali --- Spelling ? Deolali. That's the spelling on my father's army records. He was not there because he was loopy. Deolali was a major transit point, and almost every (army) body passed through there. Wikipedia says "Deolali transit...

Re: ROBERT MACK - THE BLUE

If so, that would be Patois - A version of which is still spoken in Guernsey, generally by the fishermen, but a dying langiage, I'm told ! This is getting off the point, but ... I think Geraint calls it Jerriais, and the Guernsey French is Dgernesiais. Not that I know anything about it. The informa...

Re: Fancy an old desk?

PS look closely at the label on Tesco's own whisky (and Sainsbury's for that matter). They colour it with caramel.......aaarrgghh! Better to spend just a bit more and get the real thing? (We are a long way from a Victorian school desk with the CH provenance!) If you don't like the caramel, then you...

Re: Old Blue Clearout

Was there not a special note that when played by the organ vibrated in the Head Master's stall at the far end of the Chapel? I remember Corks mentioning this at Choir Practice once. Corks might well have said it. And the choir might well have believed him. At this distance in time, I couldn't possi...

Re: Nursemaids

Yes, indeed. I remember being shown how things worked by a nursemaid when I entered in 1954, and so far as I recall the system was still operating unchanged when I left in 1962. My nursemaid seemed to be held responsible for me, and, since I was spectacularly disorganised and inattentive, I suspect ...

Re: Mobile phones

I hate the things myself, but it seems my daughter will be in the minority if she doesn't have one... I've seen a basic (only does calls and texts) but flash looking one on the Vodaphone network for £10 and daughter's birthday is very soon. Should I get it do you think? If you're contemplating £1...

Re: Picture in the Times ? Housey

Was Horsham ever illuminated by gas-unlikely? It was all-electric from first build - a DC system with its own generating station. It got connected to the mains and went over to AC in my time - around 1956, I think. I'm inclined to believe that the photos are of a ward in London, but I've no evidenc...

Re: Housing Market

Perhaps the english way of buying/selling houses need to be changed to something like the Scottish system (perhaps someone could tell me if its as good as people say?). Well, the Scottish system does work quite well a lot of the time, but it has its own problems. First of all, the idea that you can...

I had always thought, that Yiddish was a Central European dialect of Hebrew, mixed with German (Cf. Dutch and Afrikaans) I do not imagine that Yiddish is the national language of Israel ---- perhaps some OB of Jewish origin, will enlighten me ? Hebrew is indeed the national language of Israel, but ...

Some of the faces are slowly coming back to me but I'm guessing to a certain extent W78 Middle row right Patterson, Fair hair next to him: Paul Wade, next to him with shiny hair, Lyle Middle row left I thought was a poster here but since he hasn't admitted his crime I'll leave it. The boy lying dow...

I think now, having had a good look, that it's Ian Packington. I think this must be 1960 or 1961.

Re: Horsham 1954-62

For reasons I cannot begin to imagine, the name "Taylor" suddenly sprang into my head in relation to the racer on the far right. Does that make sense to anyone? I think the person in shorts behind him is Fawcett (Col. B), and I suspect the person in the CCF beret is Paul Wade (Col. A). I'...

Re: Horsham 1954-62

Thankyou all for the names. My memory of those days is fairly rusty, but I think the pancake race does show Gerald Ashton next to Nick Cox, and on the other side of him I'd suggest (hesitantly) Blogg, Pearl and Jenkins, all of Col A.

Re: Horsham 1954-62

That particular bridge was not over the Arun. So far as I remember, it was built across a dry dell here http://tinyurl.com/rexsitech54-62 . Falling off it would have been nasty. Perhaps that's why the exercise moved to the Arun in later years. I guess Wakefield's must be as strong a memory for my co...

Re: Horsham 1954-62

Do I recognize the ColA junior housemaster, one Mr Vinen, reclining on the cricket photos? Yes, that's right. And thanks for the other names. Since there has obviously been some interest in these pictures, I've added another bunch. With these pictures being on public view on Flickr, I haven't inclu...
