Confessions Of A CH Pupil

Post by Mid A 15 »

What did YOU do that you shouldn't? Did you get caught? If so what happened?

Me,

Well I played rugby for Horsham 3rd XV a few times while I was at CH. The school teams didn't want me which, at the time, was a source of real disappointment and a cause of real anger as it appeared to be based on personality rather than ability. I was fanatically keen on sport at school so took it very badly.

I was encouraged though by Gerald Davies who, having seen me play, expressed surprise that I was not in a school team which affirmed my by now wavering belief that I DID have some ability. With that vote of confidence from a British Lion I thought sod the school I'll play for Horsham so surreptitiously used to disappear on saturday afternoons hoping that either Horsham or the opposition would be short so that I would get a game.

During my final Michaelmas Term I played quite a few games and, being lucky enough to score the odd try, appeared in the West Sussex County Times (I think that was the name of the local rag) as AN Other to preserve my anonymity.

I played alongside one Paul Parker who played cricket for Cambridge University, Sussex and England. He should also have got a Rugby Blue at Cambridge but the dopy so and so injured himself just before the game so he never did.

I also enjoyed having a beer or two after the game and still getting back for roll call not having been missed in the intervening period.

If I'm honest though I still would have rather played for the school.

I did the old classic of putting clear film across the bowls of the toilets in house. The result was hilarious if seriously messy. My housemaster realised who it was staraight away and I spent a hell of a long time with a mop and tooth brush.

The Great Plum was always well behaved?

How can this be when Blondie95 wants you to throw another of your legendary parties?
