According to his friend Bryan Magee, Flecker said to him (CD), on hearing that he wanted to be a musician, that he (Flecker) would provide a cap to hold the pennies.

Anyone got any other CH related anecdotes about CD, that we can use in the next OBM?

It's a shame that Neill is no longer posting because I seem to remember him posting somewhere on here way back when that he knew CD.

He was to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award on OB Day. I hope it can be given posthumously.

Typical negative CH response to anyone displaying ambition.

The NYT has a nice obituary for the great man here:

Don't know if this is of interest, but Sir C's two (I think) sisters attended Hertford, and hated eating the weekly fish dish (fish bones in cheese sauce one week, alternating with fish bones in white sauce with green bits the next) with 'regular' cutlery, so, when financially able to do so, generously donated a set of fish knives and forks for each of the 8 houses.

I spent many hours polishing 6's set, reminiscing over helping my Nan polish the church brasses and the family silver (bone handled knives and forks - nothing fancy), while trying not to gag over the lingering smell of fish.

Nothing to do with Sir Colin; how strange that my own memory of fish knives at Hertford also focuses on the cleaning of them! Also the 'salmon pink' sauce that occurred frequently with fish - a similar shade to Suffolk pink houses (where it is apparently caused by pigs blood in the render!). Anyway RIP Sir Colin.

Sir Colin Davis presented the prizes at end of term Hertford prizegiving Summer 1969, I remember as I actually received a prize for progress and as a 13year old, was quite in awe of going up and collecting it from him. It was The Complete Works of Shakespeare, still on our bookshelf today!

Fish knives? The very thought...

Phone for the fish knives, Norman
As cook is a little unnerved;
You kiddies have crumpled the serviettes
And I must have things daintily served.

Are the requisites all in the toilet?
The frills round the cutlets can wait
Till the girl has replenished the cruets
And switched on the logs in the grate.

It's ever so close in the lounge dear,
But the vestibule's comfy for tea
And Howard is riding on horseback
So do come and take some with me.

Now here is a fork for your pastries
And do use the couch for your feet;
I know that I wanted to ask you-
Is trifle sufficient for sweet?

Milk and then just as it comes dear?
I'm afraid the preserve's full of stones;
Beg pardon, I'm soiling the doileys
With afternoon tea-cakes and scones.

The Daily Mail on line has a longish piece about Sir Colin .... complete with an excellent picture of him with his pet iguana:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... z2R2njKMxA

I'm slightly puzzled by their take on his CH education though:
Aged 11, thanks to a bequest from a relative, Colin was sent to the independent Christ’s Hospital School in Horsham, West Sussex, where he was bullied because of his social background, but became an accomplished clarinet player.
Makes it all sound very exclusive and expensive!!

Antinous -- this is the Daily Mail, so one should assume before one starts that it is to be taken with a large pinch of salt. I doubt if anyone at CH was ever bullied because of their social class (unless they were unbearably posh, a much more likely reason).

However, all the obituaries mention a great-uncle in connexion with Sir Colin's entry to CH, and talk of the great-uncle's 'benevolence', as if he had come up with the moolah, which clearly was not crucial, or even important, to entry. Perhaps the great-uncle was a governor who presented him. Does anyone know?
