they have a fancy coat with more buttons and velvet cuffs ... well worth the hard work or extra responsibility
In my day it was a mark for extraordinary conduct; you had to be a grecian, you would be a house monitor but being a monitor did not mean you wouyld get your buttons.AFAIR no extra responsibility but a pain for the fag who had to keep it clean.

Coats were made to measure instead of "off the peg" and also lighter.
Shoz; when I was 15 my (standard issue) coat weighed 22 pounds (don't ask me the kilos - I guess it's around 10kg. And visitors comment about pupils looking tired.....!! No wonder

Although a 'girl' all this brings back many memories.

Our system seems to have been much the same. (65-72)

I remember my first day, going to the house linen room and being 'fitted' for my uniform, then going back downstairs where my parents were ttaking tea with the Monitresses.

I can even remember my exact words to them "Are you still here?"

I could not wait for them to leave so I could get on with my exciting new life.

BTW I was close to my parents and indeed I still am.

I did however have little sister (8 years younger) and although I have always been her 'big sister' we did not really become friends until she was in her mid-20s as we had no shared history.

Right a quick update for Shoz and Co.

Seintenej: You left 61, around the time I came up to Col B from Prep, and as upper and lower boys didn't mix much in houses, I doubt we would remember each other.

Stool-Ball Bats: Definitely NOT ping-pong bats. They wouldn't have taken the punishment. They had a larger batting face and a much thicker and sturdier handle.

First-Day: Arrived at Prep B after lunch. Mother left about an hour later, and my world fell apart !

Velvet Cuffs: Oh No ! Not that again ! DaveByThe Sea will be getting all excited again !

Perhaps I could start a sub-topic in here called 'Interesting Facts about CH'

I suppose I am telling you all something you already know, but the roof over the dining hall is reputed to be the largest unsupported roof in Europe.

How about that then! :P

Does 'C.H. Trivia' not encompass 'Interesting facts about C.H.' anyway?

Looking down at the food was a challenge in itself, why would I want to look up at all the food on the ceiling too? :)

But if you looked up, would you say to yourself 'I bet that's the largest un-supported roof in Europe!'
