Friends of ours have 22 month old twins John & Katie, and a 3 month old Mary - all very traditional names; but not so popular now.
Jonathan seems popular and there are loads of Katies, but Mary is unusual nowadays.

More to the point, they had sex when their twins were 10 months old? I was still a zombie then. Not helped by the fact that we moved to the US when mine were 10 months old.

My thought too, Alex. Hey, for my friends it may have been a one off with totally unexpected consequences - it does happen!!!!

Now, I'm very new to this. But is anyone else out there at all worried about Alex's sleeping habits/ Maybe she's like Mrs.Thatcher....ouch! Or is she on the night shift? I thought Mary was the midwife. Must dash, half-term over, back to school tomorrow......

I see what you mean, perhaps she had been out.

I am just an early riser.

englishangel wrote:Funnily enough there weren't many Marys at CH, though it was a popular name in the 50's. When I went nursing, out of 13 recent graduates in my 'set' (one a bloke) four of us were called Mary. (Very Bunty)
I think The Bunty cribbed the Four Marys from a traditional English/Scottish Folk song called "Mary Hamilton"( which I have often sung ). It has a very lovely poignant tune.

I found this on the web but the song is not "totally abandoned" but quite well known in folky circles.....in various always tragic versions!

http://www.folkinfo.org/songs/displayso ... songid=411

Here are the words I used to sing ( Joan Baez version ) For the "Four marys" ref. see last verse.

MARY HAMILTON

Word is to the kitchen gone
And word is to the hall,
And word is up to Madam the Queen
And that's the worst of all,
That Mary Hamilton's born a babe to the highest Stuart of all

"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton,
Arise and tell to me,
What thou hast done with thy wee babe
I saw and heard weep by thee?"

"I put him in a tiny boat,
And cast him out to sea,
That he might sink or he might swim,
But he'd never come back to me."

"Arise, arise, Mary Hamilton,
Arise and come with me;
There is a wedding in Glasgow town
This night we'll go and see."

She put not on her robes of black,
Nor her robes of brown,
But she put on robes of white,
To ride into Glasgow town.

And as she rode into Glasgow town,
The city for to see,
The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife
Cried, "Ach, and alas for thee."

"Ah, you need not weep for me," she cried
"You need not weep for me;
For had I not slain my own wee babe
This death I would not dee."

"Ah, little did my mother think
When first she cradled me,
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee."

Then by and come the King himself,
Looked up with a pitiful eye,
"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton,
Tonight you'll dine with me."

"Ah, hold your tongue, my sovereign liege,
And let your folly be;
For if you'd a mind to save my life
You'd never have shamed me here."

"Cast off, cast off my gown," she cried,
"But let my petticoat be,
And tie a napkin 'round my face;
The gallows I would not see."

"Last night I washed the Queen's feet,
And put the gold on her hair,
And the only reward I find for this,
The gallows to be my share."

"Last night there were four Marys,
Tonight there'll be but three,
There was Mary Beaton, and Mary Seaton,
And Mary Carmichael, and me."

BTW to all those speculating about my night owl habits

I like to write
in the quiet of the night
when the werewolves howl
and the moon shines bright

I am ignoring Maureen's "Mrs Thatcher" comment (LOL) !

Jo Macnamara's family were stationed at RAF Gutersloh in the mid/late sixties and she and I travelled backwards and forwards to Germany together a few times, as my family were in Gutersloh as well (my father taught in a BFES school). She was a couple of years older than me but always very kind about this younger hanger-on.
Sometimes (because of timing of flights etc) we would have to stay at school a day or so longer when term finished, which was actually quite good fun, no lessons and we could choose ANY bed (wow!) to sleep in.
One time we left a shade early as well, and I was summoned to DR's office to be harangued. Apparantly my parents Had Taken It For Granted That This Was Permitted and their careless breach of etiquette was TOTALLY my fault !!! Crumbs!!! I was mortified.
I wonder whether anyone from Sixes would remember my sister and her then boyfriend (now husband) coming to take me out on a couple of Long Sats.? David was at RAF Cranwell and considered very dishy, I think he used to cause a bit of a flutter and he always liked Jo!
