Oh - and the wonderful

Charis.

There's a lovely name with a beautiful meaning!

(and one of the terrific HOGoFs on Facebook too!)

Mary was one of my best friends at Hertford. At the time she HATED being called Mary-Rose and was always known as Mary - apart from the odd teacher calling her by her full name that is!

I don't recall anyone else being called Yvonne. Although saying that I am the oldest person I know with my name LOL

I guess Kirrily could qualify as an unusual name - we have only ever heard of two others, both Australian; also a nursery teacher named her hamster Kirrily after my daughter!!

There was a girl in my form called Armorel. I've never come across that name since. Sadly she's no longer with us.

Really Ann? I had not picked up that Armorel Drew had left us. I am sorry to hear that - and I did have a brief correspondence with Aureol van Someren, a couple of years ago. But look no further than CH of today for unusual names, as I know of a Noah and today (St Matthews Day celebrations in St Paul's) we heard from Holly, Jethro, Yetunde - and there must be hundreds more of. Individual and ,unusual names.

Kerren - Armorel's death was mentioned somewhere on this forum, I think by her brother, but I cannot remember where. I remember her quite well from Hertford. Did she not also go on to become a governor - or is my aging brain just making sound connections between Armorel and Almoner?!!! (and no I am not confusing her with Kathleen Duncan nee Dale!)

I hope you are not confusing them Frances because Kathleen Duncan (nee Dale) was very much present and correct at St. Paul's, today!

Yes, of course! Damaris Gwilliam, with the fascinatingly husky adult voice. My year, but ISTR Damaris was in 2's. Very white skin, hair black with natural soft curls.

I've never met another Damaris!

There were several Hil(l)arys at Hertford in 60's/early 70's. Was that name made popular by the climber?

What a surprise to see myself mentioned on this forum in connection with unusual names (Ditteke) and with swimming. I remember that tiny pool...I've still got photos of the swimming team in '62, '63 and '64 showing us clutching our black cozzies with the stitched-on H's and boxes, but I can't put names to all the faces. Swimming was probably the only thing I was any good at (apart from being naughty!)

Do all Hil(l)arys look the same? Check out Hillary Clinton and Hilary Mantel.

Hi Dee

As I remember, almost everything was considered "naughty" by Lily Thomson - at any rate - almost everything that I did! :(
