I always thought the above pairs were just devoted good friends. Dare I say they were kind of neuter women?

Merce and Chemi-T were a devoted couple, I would swear, but Frances knew them best.

Hey... Miss Park! "Report self for misbehaviour! Taught to be honourable!" What a woman! Still, how else to treat the worst behaved U1V since the beginning of time? :(

Wasn't EVERY UiV th"worst behaved from the beginning of time?"

Although perhaps by my time the age had dropped because we were definitely the worst III form, were were told frequently (in 2's anyway)

CH Hertford really was a culture of negativity, wasn't it?

As a sort of 'outsider' on this particular forum.

YES - It was 617 Squadron, until recently, still a commited bomber squadron, based at Waddington in Lincolnshire, if memory serves......

and on a more recent topic on this thread.....

Two 'Misses' teaching at the same boarding school, AND sharing a house ?? COME ON LADIES - You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes.

I fully appreciate that in this modern age, it is quite acceptable to be 'Out', but in days gone past, I realise that discretion had to be the order of the day.

Incidently, Jan's Head and Deputy head were an 'item' at her secondary school, but no-one would dare to voice it openly in those days, (late 60's)

The awareness of teachers in couples, in any way other than friends, was COMPLETELY over my head during my days at CH. Very naive!!

Angela (Pratt) - would you post your photo of the swim team?? There aren't nearly enough photos from Hertford!!

Staff relationships have been discussed elsewhere on the forum, but I will repeat that I still find it odd? - perhaps quite normal for CH Hertford under DR's rule ?- that Chemi T and Merc happily wandered about the grounds arm in arm in full view of anyone who happened to be looking (including me sometimes) I remember that I found it reassuring that someone in that environment not only had positive emotions, but was happy to exhibit them. However, even then I wondered whether DR would have tolerated a heterosexual couple among the staff exhibiting their affection for each other.

It really is possible to be unmarried and share accommodation with a long-term female friend whilst not being sexually involved with each other.

What chance did those women have of getting out and socialising with normal people? I suppose they had to be content with the friendships/enmities/heirarchies within those walls.

But Miss Jukes did show a distinct liking for my father, as I have written before. :D (Blush, simper, coy laugh)

Sorry to disappoint you JR!

Just seen Caroline's post. Yes, how I agree. It was nice that they could wander round arm in arm! Two people actually feeling able to show affection for each other, although Merce and Chemi-T had separate flats. Suppose any of US had behaved like that? It would have been "inappropriate friendships" all the way. Well - friendships weren't exactly allowed anyway, were they, unless with your year in your House? Ridiculous.

We never really knew if they were a couple. Possibly not because for their generation women were often "close friends" since due to the world wars there was a definite shortage of men. I can remember rumours that several spinster staff had lost boyfriends or fiances. All the staff at Hertford were spinsters in 1956 when I started and they all lived in the white house(across the road) or the red house or pars of the old wards 9 or 10.
Having been born in1945, I was one of the few girls with a father, most of the older ones' fathers (and/or mothers)had been killed in the war. Accepted then , at primary school as well, but so sad when I look back on it. It was probably even more common at CH since it was a possible way of affording a "good education" by widowed mothers for their daughters.

Quite apart from anything else, some of the staff accommodation in question consisted of two-person houses, so it was fairly natural they were going to be shared by ...errr.... two people.

If I remember correctly Nellie & Miss Rutherford left at separate times and to separate destinations. That doesn't preclude them being an item but I suspect they were just school accommodation sharers who happened to get on quite well. BJ & Miss WIlson - I'm not so sure.

I don't know about anyone else with daughters but I find the next generation (X, Y?) of girls are quite happy walking around arm in arm with their female friends, and kissing them on the lips and buying them little gifts. Claire's Accessories even has a range of split rings/lockets etc for BFF. (Best Friends Forever).
It's a different world.

I, also, do, with trepidation ------ BUT --

In classic Breaststroke, the legs always perform in unison.--- Modern style pulls the arms down to enable the head to rise. sufficiently, to breathe.
I Freestyle (Crawl) they alternate, toes pointed inwards --- although in the early "Trudgeon" style in was overarms, with breaststroke legs
In Dolphin, as the name suggests, they are kept together in a vertical plane.
Dolphin kick is also used, underwater, after the initial dive, in a race
Backstroke arms should be close to the head, with a Freestyle kick, but with more knee flex.

I really must learn how to swim !!

I've been digging out some Hertford photos so will try and master how to copy them onto my laptop so that I can post them onto the photos section....

Re: My Shame

[quote="Angela Woodford" Far, far worse was a problem of epilation. This was a terrible worry to me. I'm very dark-haired, and even after the use of a "ladies razor" which came in a shameful little pink plastic box, or after the application of disgustingly smelling "Veet Odourless" cream I still had horrible dark shadows - I'm embarassed still thinking of it!!

When we did the vertical diving, I knew - absolutely! - that everyone would be looking at my underarms! I couldn't confide this hideous worry to anyone.[/quote]

I was reading yesterday of protests by Mumsnet that girls with this sort of problem are getting waxed in salons  but thought wistfully... if only in my time!

If only!

It wasn't just the swimming ordeal. It was exposing my legs daily in summer in those cardboarded fawn socks. The shame. The embarassment!
