Although I remember when in Lamb B during this time of year many people didn't have shoe laces.And it was all due to pupils playing conkers.It was obviously far easier to pinch someone elses than to go to the tuck shop.I can remember people getting into trouble during JDS' breakfast parade.

An interesting Topic ----
Regarding multiple Bands, not being in time, due to the slow speed of Sound -----
A problem in the Army, was that the Light Infantry (Now known as the Rifles --- see "Sharpe" ) always march at a pace MUCH quicker than the Infantry.
The Guards (At least in my day) had a Slower pace ----
Confusion could reign -- but by clever sorting of the"Order of March" --- "Overtaking" was avoided !

According to Bandy, rifles at 140, the rest at 120

The Royal Green Jackets , Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire Light Infantry, now the Rifles certainly march at 140 (my son as a cadet won a drill prize doing this). the Durham Light Infantry marched even faster, at 160.

I'm told that during the 2nd WW, the Italians trained at 210 a minute,...............

I would suggest that the Gurkhas march at whatever speed they like ----- who would argue ??
I thought JR would have also mentioned Italian Tanks ----- 3 reverse gears and 1 forward, in case of attack from the rear !
This Wartime propoganda was a bit unfair on the Italians, who had taken a beating in Libya --- but some of their Troops --- particularly the Alpini -- were first class ! --- and as one Italian remarked to me "But where is your Caruso, your Leonardo, your Vivaldi, your Verdi ? " ---- point taken !!
