Why are some of the more 'junior' lads in what I would term, summer-flannel dress ?
It may be a hangover from the austerity of the year wars, when new uniforms were not available under rationing.
Some of the photos during the war showed that most pupils were not in uniform for the same reason.
Can't remember whether something to this effect appeared in a recent Blue.

Yes, you are correct... still a shortage of school uniforms after the war.
Those who went to the Prep School were issued with shorts, shirts etc. but those entering school direct into the main Houses were issued with uniforms.
Those in the 1949 photograph in shorts (me in the middle of front row) had probably been through the Prep school and were still waiting for uniform issue.
(I think this is correct... it's a long time ago - Ha!)

No, when you said that they're younger than you, I thought you might have meant to say 'older'.

Must be your youthful mind racing ahead of itself....

You're quite right Richard. My mistake. I'll edit it.

NON-HOUSIE UNIFORM

Post by UserRemovedAccount »

I went to the Prep in the Winter Term of 1948 and on into Lamb B at the start of Summer Term 1949. I well remember the outfit which was a brown tweed jacket, grey shorts and long grey stockings. Presumably we wore a tie but I can't rmember the colour/pattern. This uniform was retained by those of us going up from the Prep until one day (either late 49 or early 50) when we were suddenly marched off the the Wardrobe and issued with our full Housie unfiorm. It was a red-letter day because until then we felt as if we didn't quite belong. The bands were an awful struggle at first, but a price well worth paying.

On the day of issue, to my great surprise my Housie coat included an RMS plate which was the first occasion that I knew that I had been admitted to the school under this particular entry scheme and my father had never bothered to tell me.

John Hopgood was quite right that this was all to do with clothes rationing and had been introduced in about 1943 when the pre-war clothing stocks ran out.

If anyone has a photo of Prep A/B dating from 1944 to 1949/50 I am prepared to bet that all the boys would be wearing the brown jacket.

House Photograph

Post by John Knight »

I have just had a scan through all the 'house photographs' and I cannot find one group picture of any of the 'Ladies' houses.
Please, - does anybody have a photograph of Barnes B residents post 1985 to publish here.
Thanks.

I'll ask my brother if he's got a scanner (can't remember if he has or not) - if not I'll dig a few other pictures out & send them to you to scan if you like.

OK, if you need my scanner send me a PM and I will send you my address.
The girls have been at Horsham now for 22 years, it would be nice to have a few house photographs to add to the collection.

I know my old house (Ba.B) is a 'Ladies House' and presumably Ba.A
What other houses are the girls in?

When we moved in 1985 it was Barnes A & B & Coleridge A & B.

Now there are 4 girls houses - Leigh Hunt & Thornton I believe. And then there's the Grecians houses which I know nothing about really.
