Although a 'girl' all this brings back many memories.
Our system seems to have been much the same. (65-72)
I remember my first day, going to the house linen room and being 'fitted' for my uniform, then going back downstairs where my parents were ttaking tea with the Monitresses.
I can even remember my exact words to them "Are you still here?"
I could not wait for them to leave so I could get on with my exciting new life.
BTW I was close to my parents and indeed I still am.
I did however have little sister (8 years younger) and although I have always been her 'big sister' we did not really become friends until she was in her mid-20s as we had no shared history.

Right a quick update for Shoz and Co.
Seintenej: You left 61, around the time I came up to Col B from Prep, and as upper and lower boys didn't mix much in houses, I doubt we would remember each other.
Stool-Ball Bats: Definitely NOT ping-pong bats. They wouldn't have taken the punishment. They had a larger batting face and a much thicker and sturdier handle.
First-Day: Arrived at Prep B after lunch. Mother left about an hour later, and my world fell apart !
Velvet Cuffs: Oh No ! Not that again ! DaveByThe Sea will be getting all excited again !

So that you could admire the unsupported nature of the ceiling, and think "Oooh, that must be one of the biggest in Europe!" and, of course, more importantly, in order not to look at what you were having to eat......palgsm93 wrote:Looking down at the food was a challenge in itself, why would I want to look up at all the food on the ceiling too?Richard Ruck wrote:Bl*ody hell, did you never look up??

Just discovered Big Grecian site - not that it will let me do anything! But it did give me the idea of putting something Houseyish as my ring tone. Next time it goes off in a quiet place (during the communion?) any OBs that happen to be around will immediately make contact.
Oh, by the way, the business about the Dining Hall roof being the largest unsupported span etc - well I have a horrid feeling that 'twas I who started that rumour way back in the 50s. Just think about what it means anyway .........? If a roof is not supported, why then ............

The girls' school moved to Hertford in the 18th century. The boys' school moved to the present location in 1902 (buildings by Aston Webb and Ingress Bell) with the girls' school re-unifying in 1985. Among artworks to be seen at the school are a monumental frieze painted by Antonio Verrio , and the largest unsupported roof in Europe in the dining hall, and a series of mural panels in the chapel by Frank Brangwyn.
This is where I got my info from, but I forget the site, I will find it later.
