It seems that you guys are stressing about what your children are going to be doing - This is NOT a criticism....and its lovely that you want all the information before they get to Horsham......

but...

are the kids stressing as well or are they just going with the flow???

I'm not going to talk about single and double preps that I had - it has probably all changed since then

I guess its the same as anywhere - if they are organised and get the work done on time it wont be a problem!

J isn't worried about any aspect of CH, and I'm not 'worried' I'm just very very nosy, and seeing as I get zero communication from J about what goes on at school at the moment, I'm not holding out any hope for a change in the future!

I've had a lot of questions about the boarding side of life at CH, but I've just realised I have no idea about the academic side, nor can I find any info apart from the structure of the day and lessons taught.

So how are the years taught? How many classes are there per year? are they streamed according to ability? Will they be with their housemates?

Any help would be appreciated, as J's peers are finding out about how their new schools are run, I'd like to give him the same information.

Now, I'm going back to 1992 but I think things are broadly similar...

on my squits, we were in sets for French and Maths. (I was set 1 and set 3 respectively) but the other classes were all in your form (I think there may have been 'upper' and 'lower' streams but we were never told officially!) There's about 20-25 in your class and there will be a couple of people in your house in your class.
On your 3rd form, Latin is/was set - all other classes except French and Maths were not set...
On your LE - GE, Science was streamed, and your options may be set (there were 3 sets for German and 2 for Latin whilst I was there for instance)

Yes that does help, I imagine that some children from prep school may well have learnt french, whereas J hasn't, so setting in this subject would be necessary.

From what I gather, they are set for Maths and Languages.

They are not necessarily with their house mates - which is probably a good thing as they get to know lot of other people and would you really want to work and live with the same people?

Ask what you like about the academic side and I'll ask my son and pass on the answers.....pretty clueless myself really!

I will ask my son as well, he has definitely been set for maths right from the start but not sure about anything else.
In case you don't know:- the pupils are given grades every 3 weeks (copy sent home) which gives you a good idea how they are doing. In my sons house, they also have an incentive to improve their grades in the form of edible treats!

Yes, you'll be given a lovely long list! But PLEASE remember to name absolutely everything. It makes it so much easier for staff to re-unite anything lost or left lying around the house to with the right child!

Does the school dentist approve? What was the comment of the anti-obesity inspector?
IMHO the incentive should be to avoid getting detentions. I can promise your son's housemaster that that incentive certainly worked on dyslexics (a condition not then understood or allowed for at CH)
