You're right, she hasn't been here for about 4 weeks. But I'm sure she is ok as she's still posting on Facebook (most recently earlier today).

Think so, I've seen her elsewhere so don't worry! :)

I vividly remember the coconut sanding phase - and also the phase of putting creamy milk into jars and shaking (for what felt like days!) to produce butter. Also the crochet phase; the marbles phase; the ginger beer phase etc etc etc

I have just been diverted by a link, from a HOGOF, to Hertfordshire Life mag's assertion that the School Hall Clock has been restored - I didn't know that it had been made in 1824!

When I saw that it had stopped (at a time that would have been during All-Out, I think) it seemed appropriate. And now... is it operating away again? I don't know if I feel pleased or not! :?

I can't see the link on HOGOF, but I think maybe the clock is working now. I searched on http://www.rightmove.co.uk for flats for sale on the old school site, and looked at the pictures. There seem to be at least three different versions, with the clock showing different times.

I would have posted this some time ago, but got distracted looking at the floorplans (I love floorplans). There is a one bedroom flat for sale with hall, kitchen, bathroom and sitting room, but no bedroom.

The new occupant will probably be sitting up all night, panicking over her needlework, Mary!

Thank you for that website, Mary. I enjoyed it - though there is a difference between the 'Bluecoats' flats for sale - one of which is clearly occupied by a student! - and those in Chauncy Court. Now that I myself live in a retirement complex, where I am hugely happy, I found myself comparing my benefits against those in Chauncy Court, and found it sadly lacking......apart from the nostalgia of the sweeping staircase and the marble floor with the school crest!

I feel annoyed with myself because the HOGOF who posted the article was a Friend of a Friend, and I promptly forgot her name! The article had some wonderful ancient pictures of the School, including a very old lineup of girls on the Field.

It never occurred to me at the time to appreciate that marvellous old clock - what a challenge in specialist maintenance!

Then I thought of the School Bell. I was once chatting to Head Girl Judy Evans as she went over to ring it - "go ahead - you do it" she said. Our conversation involved her looking at some papers she was carrying, as the V1 Formers did, at bosom level. So I rang the bell!

Was there a rota for Prefects to do this, or was it a Head Girl Duty? And who rang the Rising Bell, I wonder?

Can't answer about the Rising Bell! There was a rota for Prefects to ring the bell at other times. I remember one time when I rung it and then had to go to the school block where I was to help a member of staff (alas I cannot remember who it was) with a class. I was told off for arriving late - when I duly informed her that I had come straight from ringing the bell which was the signal to go to the classroom not the signal to start the lesson. I must have been feeling fairly bolshy to give it to her straight!

Being "ticked off" for lateness, as an 18 year old... and a Prefect! :x You told that Mistress, though! 8) What could be more reasonable than your School Bell ringing duty?

I still suffer extreme anxiety if I am late for an appointment!

How I remember the awfulness of panting in late for anything - maybe twice in my schooldays? You had to stammer out "Excuse me please, Miss Whatever!". The shame! The punishment was always a Disorder Report.

(Katharine, :offtopic: my daughter Susannah has given birth to a lovely little baby boy, Sebastian, on Monday! So, like you, I'm now a granny! Amazing.)

Congratulations Angela!!!! :D :D :wine:

I found an image of the Giles Grandma I was going to post here but, fortunately perhaps, my IT skills are not up to the job

Thank you Andy - how kind! I've been testing the patience of all the HOGOFs with the imminent birth for weeks!

Yes, I'm beginning to look exactly like the Giles Grandma - my role model and inspiration! Didn't she have a flexible and lethal cane with which to thwack malefactors? Got to get!

Many congratulations Angela - and to Susannah and husband too! What will you be called? We are Nain and Taid - the North Welsh terms for Granny and Grandpa.

Gosh, a difference between North and South Wales. My Port Talbot grandparents were 'Gi' (I think short for 'Mamgi') and 'GaGa'. Yes, many congratulations to Angela and family!
