Keith Battarbee retires

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

Keith Battarbee retires

Post by mvgrogan »

Just thought some of the regulars on here might like to know I will be attending the valedictory lecture of Keith Battarbee (BaB 54-62) today. He is celebrating 40 years as Senior Lecturer at the University of Turku by retiring!!

Each faculty at each Finnish University as a boilersuit in a different colour that students wear for recreation e.g. the regular Thursday night pubcrawl! These boilersuits become a record of their time at Uni by adding patches & stains - THEY ARE NOT TO BE WASHED! Hence the creation of this patch by the student assocation which sold like hotcakes!!

more photos later, I hope...

He is delivering his lecture in his full Cambridge canonicals, scarlet and all* (a feast for the eyes of his Finnish students, no doubt). And yes, an occasion for congratulation.

*I wonder where he got that from. Surely he hasn't kept a set all these years?

Incidentally, tell us what he actually said!!

Keith spoke for half an hour about "Disciplinarity & University". Even as a non-academical I found it interesting. I'll ask him if I can get a copy to share with you...

After the lecture there was a response and presentation then we all moved out to the lobby for Charles Dickens, Morris Dancing & Irish Dancing and speeches and more presentations. Champagne, coffee & cake.

Now I am intrigued - 'disciplinarity' is not a word I have ever heard! What exactly does it mean? And didn't Keith look grand?!

He did start by explaining that this is a word not found in the dictionary but related to Multidisciplinary and Interdiciplinary studies and went on to define the disciplines he believes are referred to... (but I wasn't aking notes.... )

Yes, he does look grand! Ruth looked good, too, in her Oxford "garb" complete with silly cap!

I'm glad it's not just me being stupid - not having been educated at either Oxford or Cambridge ((I had to make do with CH!)

Not to worry, Frances. I was educated at CH and Cambridge but the latter was just an add-on to the former, and frankly it didn't add much on.
