I could recite the one for before without even thinking, but got a bit stuck half way through the second! I found this after a search here, but I'm not certain of the end of the second one, it doesn't sound quite right!

Give us thankful hearts O Lord God
For the table which thou hast spread for us
Bless thy good creatures to our use
And us to thy service.

After:

Blessed Lord,
We yield thee hearty praise and thanksgiving
for our Founder and Benefactors
By whose charitable benevolence
Thou hast refreshed our bodies at this time.
So season and refresh our souls
with thy heavenly spirit,
that we may live to thy honour and glory.
Protect thy Church, the Queen and all the Royal Family,
and preserve us in peace and truth,
through Christ our Saviour.

Thanks Katherine. Indeed the first seems spot on but the reference to the Royal Family in after meals seems odd and I dot recall it.

The Royal Family was certainly there in Hertford, we longed for the times the reader said OIL the Royal Family instead of ALL! More likely to happen at House tea than in the Dining Hall!

I’ve now looked it up in my Dad’s copy of The Christ’s Hospital Book, the words there match those I gave earlier. Surprisingly the word Grace is not in the index, they are listed in a section at the back of Prayers appointed for the use of the children of CH. this section was reprinted from an edition published in 1900, so the Queen was Victoria!

From memory, and I have wracked my brains over the years without success, but seeing this reminds me, I would remove 'that' after 'table'.

through Christ our Saviour.
Amen
To the best of my recollection.

My memory of first grace chimes with yours Katharine. Maybe there was a Hertford/Horsham anomaly?

If you were an atheist, what sort of a grace would you compose? And would it include thanks for skiffage pie?

Grace seems to centre on God.
But suppose it was some other bod?

I think Mr Ed is right with the ending of the first grace for Jesus Christ his sake, but I’ll definitely stick with the word which rather than that!

Comments on the Horsham Grace have to include mention of the occasion, during my time at CH, when the Grecian saying Grace (as usual speaking from the pulpit about 6 feet above the rest of us) simply mouthed it, while the Grace was said by another person on the floor below him. It was not detected, except presumably by persons standing close to the pulpit.

I think this has already been mentioned elsewhere in the Forum.

Why not? It's an anecdote. I remember in my time someone covered up the Grace with a note saying It's not your lucky day. The Grecian in question calmly took out a diary and read it.

I'll rephrase myself. Why was someone saying grace in place of the person in the pulpit?

I'm impressed anyone can remember that much of them!
I fairly sure I couldn't have repeated them while I was there and my only memories of it now are trying not to get caught messing around during, and the occasional time the lunch master(?)/monitor/the one with the gavel, made the Grecian read it again because people weren't paying attention, were still eating, or otherwise screwing around.
