Whatever they wear - the basic unifform of CH is never going to Change - it is what makes CH so totally Different.

Hehe... I think it be great fun to wear the yellow petticoats and cap! Lol... But I do think your pointers are good. Apparently a few years ago there was a vote for the pupils. They chose to keep the uniform. Thats saying something I guess. =)

The uniform has been asked about changing at least a dozen times since I was at and since CH - the answer strage as it may be is ALWAYS - stay the same - you see those horribly itchy legging things gives the boys something to moan about - ditto the jobbots (now back to the plain two piece thankfully), then there are the buttons on the great coat and the leather belt and the silver buckle....

Having had the most revolting uniform at Hertford (C'mon girls BACK ME UP!!) which actually wasn't a uniform uniform (Mary be honest - I had canary yellow games socks..... yours in 2's were at least a little better) as we all had house ties, house games socks and come the summer a variation on a theme of stripes from yellow, to pink, the blue and to gray... and then we had Sunday uniforms where the U6th wore different blouses to us "juniors" on certain occasisions, and then there were the fawn knee lenght socks that told the world and it's dog you were a JUNIOR, then it was American tan tights - and we had horrid horrid school bags - the governors realised there was this thing called plastic so all the leather school bags were used up by the time I got to CH and we had the most foul coloured and viscious school bags out - you ended up with deep scratches from the corners where the double thick stitching was, blisters on your hands as the handles were so badly formed, and they laddered your tights in the walk from the back of one room to it's front - and Miss Morrison ALWAYS knew when, where and who to check for ladders... did anyone else keep a pot of clear nail varnish in their school bags - do school bags still exist? I started buying non ladder tights and then closed the holes each night..

However, I digress.....

Having suffered the girls uniform at Hertford and then my son going to CH - I have suffered everything... if those trousers itched then they did like a rash - his legs by the time of our first allowed visit were very red! He has never got on well with wool blends, but argh the moaning, (I could say typical man....)
So as far as I am concerned the uniform stays as it is - girls wearing the same as boys with the exception of underwear... (although girls are into "boy pants" so I am well confused.....) must be time for the little white and blue pills!

As a junior girl, I wore yellow socks for three years and it didn't bother me in the slightest. In fact, when I hit the UF and had to wash my own socks

it was a pain in the *rse. Not because I am lazy, but simply because there was either a queue for the washing machine, no washing powder, or no room in the drying room.

Much nicer to have them delivered to your bed by Matron during prep...

I may be totally wrong but as I understood it the reason that senior girls wore grey socks was because back at Hertford there was always some sort of distinction for the older girls uniform wise. When the girls moved to Horsham it was effectivly the end of many very old hertford traditions so by letting the seniors have grey socks it in a way kept some sort of tradition alive.

argh nooo!!!

NONE of us from 1975 until the day they merged wore grey socks! We wore FAWN (light brown) socks, as juniors and American tan tights as Seniors, to make senior girls wear GREY SOCKS WOULD HAVE BEEN HUMILIATING!

I don't mean grey socks I know you lot never wore them I just meant some kind of distinction between juniors and seniors.

Yes - the distinction at Herts was juniors wear socks and SENIORS wear TIGHTS

To put senior girls into socks after the merger would have been very degrading - thus they carried on modifiying the uniform until it had reached it's earthly pinnacle - should the girls be allowed to wear yello socks with breechees?

That is for the school, boys and girls to decide - all we can say is what if?
Personally I think it would be a shame to see the uniform changed so that you cannot tell boy from girl - however, the ethos of the school is being upheld - no one is to be seen to be better off than anyother, all uniforms are the same, provision of said uniform will be as same to each.

Well i think it makes sense to keep the skirts for the girls...

Do the girls still have two uniforms at CH? The jacket for the summer and the housey coat for the winter?

Personally I'm all for sexual equality - all the same uniform, or all having the options.....

Maybe some of the boys would like to wear skirts, but don't have the option?!?

It would be so bizarre if girls wore breeches!! I can't say I'd of minded maybe I'd of prefered it, much easier to ride a bike I should imagine. It was a fairly common occurrance for my skirt to get caught up in the bike chain.

Mine does regularly. The housey helps, but with jackets there's no chance! Oil everywhere. such a pain!

And actually I think I'd prefer breeches to skirts... apparently (from certain girls who've borrowed breeches in the past), they're much more comfortable and warmer too! (those breezes going upwards in winter...brrrr)
