Not penguin bashing per se... But a gang of CH people led by Richard "Rigger" Bates went to Southwater to take on a gang of kids from there... They went armed with hockey sticks, etc..
The Southwater gang came armed with a shotgun....
This was in the mid-80's sometime and may just be a CH myth... There was definitely some problems with Southwater kids around this time though.

My uncle was at CH in the 70s and he said that he was in Horsham once and some kids younger than him were subject to some penguin bashing so he um, intervened.
He got sent to the headmasters office and was reprimanded then the headmaster said thanks to him for sticking up for fellow students!

I once got bashed, but in rather strange circumstances. It was in the middle of the Swan Walk shopping centre in Horsham, on a busy Friday afternoon, with lots of people around.
This bloke walked past me, and said something to me that I didn't quite catch. Foolishly (in hindsight), I turned round and asked him what he'd said. Whereupon he launched himself at me, asking whether I'd got a problem with him, and hitting me three times in the face, bloodying my nose in the process. Fortunately some of the passing shoppers pulled him off me... I was in such a state of shock, though, that I just walked straight back to school without stopping.
I've no idea what his problem was, but I guess he was probably drunk, or stoned, or otherwise not completely in control of himself! So I'm not sure whether it counts as proper "penguin bashing" or not.

Never heard of this" Penquin Bashing" before this Topic,
We were not ALLOWED into Horsham, so I suppose the situation never arose.
When the CH Special arrived at Victoria, the Station was festooned with CH uniforms, so trouble would have been unlikely --- although it didn't seem to be the "Culture" in those days.
As I have said before, being brought up in Stockwell (Lemburf) it was a tough area, but fights seemed to be on a one to one basis, as was also the case at CH. ------- Oh happy days !

penguin bashing... never experienced it, never saw it... but remember some rumours of some kind of pitched battle behind doctors lake, and the shotgun story kind of rings a bell...
but maybe it was all a myth to scare us from sneaking into town to buy cider... ...oops...giveaway...i get double detention on saturday, i suppose
anyone else remember "yeo" yeomans gorgeous ginger beer, as brewed under BaA in the tube?... highly explösive...

Still have the Rickenbacker. As I had to practically starve for 2 weeks I cant bring myself to sell it,
even though while my children were small it remained under a bed for years unused
I do wish I'd kept the Selmer 4x12 combo. They are now worth about £2000.

funnily enough, i did snap up a gorgeous honey coloured framus full bodied semi for 30€ a few weeks ago, but i gave it to a friend... (still nuts after all these years)...
glad the rickys still in good hands... i have a very wierd 50s EKO, with more knobs than a hammond, which some other nut gave me... its supposed to be worth well over 1000€
the selmer was lovely, but heavy ... wish i had my vox still, too
im not going to mention the records, `cause someone stole my complete collection some years ago... value around 5000?...
and what does this all have to do with penguin bashing?... nothing, i`m afraid
F-T, i wish you well!

Since we seem to have strayed on to Instruments ---- I still have my silver Cornet, bought for me by my Parents, when I achieved the status in the Band.
It cost them £25, which in those days was a small fortune ! and now is insured for £1000, being a pre-War Besson, class A.
Can't play it any more --- got no Lip --------- Sorry Embrasure !
