I've just realized that Margaret is older than I am so how come she wore her own clothes to FDay? I really can't remember that ever happening while i was at school. We never brought clothes from home.
I used to try to do something to get myself banned from it as a punishment but never succeeded.

Own-clothes-wearing on founders day was very circumscribed. It was allowed only for the ghastly dance, only of the top layer ie no undies from home, and with no jewellery, make-up, hair styling, etc. May have been age related, perhaps just senior wards ? Wonder who started it ?
As for avoiding this or anything else, one thing i found that usually worked was a headache, and a day under surveillance in the Inf could be better then hockey in the snow, or not-done latin prep (anyone remember the vibrant Quenrede Blench ?), despite Sister being so scarey!

I liked Queenie Blench for some reason while fearing her at the same itme. She was always good for a laugh - used to turn people's desks over, throw chalk at us etc. and sor t of creep about the school. I still remember the Latin she taught me - Caesar's Gallic wars etc. Who says we can't learn through fear?

Hertford uniform was a world away from Horsham garb. I recall how 2 of my pals were the ones to model the new Horsham uniform for everyone at Hertford in the months before the merger, because they were the smallest girls in the school and the prototypes were tiny. Everyone looked at it in disbelief, as I recall.

I remember going to Mrs Kiff's trendy boutique as we called it, aka Hertford wardrobe dept to get new items. It was a mysterious place past Miss Morrison's house near the front wall.

What I couldn't stand were the St Trinians-esque gym pinafores we had to wear when we went to Ashbourne for athletics.

At the end of the year, the school gave away loads of old uniform and I got a chapel cap as a memento, although I never wore one.

We stopped wearing chapel caps and indeed all other hats in (I think) 1969, may have been 1968. I liked them, wore something similar for my going away outfit when I got married.

WHICH REMINDS ME !

A great mate from my Col. B days, (No names - No pack drill) did film extra work as a lad, AND was in one of the St Trinians films. He's now quite successful in films and television.

Is this a non sequitur JR? Yes, I am scratching head a little - why should serving as an extra in a St Trinian's film make one a successful whatever in film and TV ...........?? Is he perhaps a porn star?

Wouldn't think so, Dave, though I haven't spoken to him since leaving CH. The sands of time might have changed his personna.

He's changed sides of the camera, if you get my drift !

We wore those tunics as winter uniform as well as for games. I think later on the blue tunics we wore on Sundays were worn everyday.

Cherry Reds and Tweeds!!

Post by Jude »

Oh happy days! Shoes were passed on from one to the next - and God help you (literally) if they were no clean and sparkly - cleaning the shoe brushes was a foul punnishment !

until we were in the 5th form we had to wear socks - when finally a "senior" and allowed to wear "tan or American Tan" tights we thought we were in heaven - until they laddered - then Miss Morrison (FM??) would tear a strip off us... The grey tunics were fine - I don't know what the problem regarding yellow socks is - we in 5's had canary yellow games socks even though our house colour was purple.. no sock maker made purple games socks.... can't think why not!!!!

Sundays had blue pinafore - basically a sack with no arms and a rounded neck, depending on the Sunday it was either spotty or striped blue and white shirts, and cherry red blazers - well looking back they were incredibly good as were the tweeds - it was a dare to take a tweed home when you left - I didn't dare as my father would have beaten me to a pulp.. but what about the blues knickers for games???? anyone remember them???

Did you still have the zip up towelling all-in-ones or had they fallen to pieces?

We went from 'Blues' to those, sounds as though you went back again.
