i wouldn't say i was a heart felt 'tolkeinite' but possibly i minor one, i did enjoy 'the hobbit' quite alot as a child... but i haven't actually read the TLOTR trilogy, so not a TRUE tolkien fan, unfortunately.

Kit Aitken used to say "Call a spade a spade and not a bl***y shovel" so I'll abuse that by saying "Call a ton a ton and not a kraut tonne". (there's only 34.4 pounds difference)

As for the phote, will it be a plain white (or off white) expanse unbroken by anything?

Yes, perhaps; but surely the plural wouldn't be 'tons', would it? I would have thought it would be 'tonnes', regardless of the spelling of the singular.

I would have instinctively disagreed with you on the question so I tried looking it up. Collins Dictionary is no help on this so I checked "The Right Word at the Right Time" which, IMHO, is the second best book available about UK English writing. (The best, again IMHO, is the Financial Times policy book for its journalists but unfortunately my secretary half-inched my copy).

The cited book does not mention the word "ton(s)" or "tonne(s)" but it does say "the sufix -es is regularly added to nouns ending in s,x,z,ch,sh (but not th, which takes a simple -s)" It then gives examples and discusses pronunciation. It then gets complicated and that is where you need to be a real "Grecian" because words with a Greek origin and ending in -on change the on to -a as in "criteria" . All in all there are over 11 small print pages on the subject of plurals - it is a very complicated subject.

I still think the Imperial plural is "tons" but I could be persuaded.

I will be restocking my cellar at the farm for a week so possibly cannot follow up any replies; sorry.

ton = ton

tons = tons

tonne is the non-british, forign equivalent, (plus a few pounds.)

tonnes is the plural, prounced tunnies, or tonnies.

Learnt this in my employment when we had to start selling out to the Krauts and Eyeties etc.

The great mathematical process to transfer litres to imperial gallons when working out fuel consumtion for the accountants.

by the by everyone, would it be worng of me to post my religous studies coursework question up, as i need Christian Perspectives on bits of it, but have no time to properly interview anyone.
i would start in in a new thread in Non CH stuff, what does everone think?

I'd put it in CH Stuff, bearing in mind that CH is a religious Foundation.

You'll find many interesting Christian perspectives from Forum members! I find religious philosophies endlessly fascinating myself, but never found, even at Hertford, 60's - early 70's that "faith" was compulsory. Chapel and house prayers, yes, but no religious pressure at all.

Your new thread will be very well received, I'm sure.

A lot of forii (Euresto please note the plural form

) stipulate that you cannot ask for answers to educational exams, tests etc. which I consider quite proper.
However, you state that you are using this as a form of interview and so long as that is all that it is I can see no objection. I agree that non-CH stuff would be an appropriate area.

This is, of course, subject to the moderators not objecting.
